Global Game Jam took place for the fifth time in the Netherlands in January 2013. There were 5 locations (+1) spread over all corners of the Netherlands at different educational institutes: NHTV Breda, HvA Amsterdam, HKU Hilversum, NHL Leeuwarden and Saxion Enschede. In the end about 520 participants made 86 games in the Netherlands. Impressive!
Tuesday night February 19, 2013, was the big evening for Global Game Jam NL participants and organizers. As one of the Global GGJ Directors it is interesting to see what local communities and the local industry do to follow up and stimulate the community feel after the Global Game Jam is over. Since 2012 Dutch Game Garden collaborates with Dutch industry magazine Control Magazine to host an evening about Global Game Jam NL a couple of weeks after the main event in January.
This year, the evening in Pakhuis de Zwijger in Amsterdam consisted of several parts. Part 1 to 4 was emulating that GGJ cooker pressure spirit, in which the organizers had asked a couple of individuals to create something on stage in 15 minutes. The audience told them what to make:
- Live Prototyping: JW Nijman (Vlambeer) made a FarCry ‘clone’;
- Live Speed painting: Joeri Lefévre made concept art for a ‘Samurai Tiger Dancing’ game
- Live level building: Gabrian van Houdt (Ragesquid) created a rocking horse stunt game level in Unity3D
- Live Machinations demo: Joris Dormans demonstrated his gamedesign tool Machinations
