The Overkill 2024

The Overkill is the playful festival celebrating indie and arthouse games, interactive arts and alternative films within a cultural and social context. Interdisciplinary, experimental and international, The Overkill presents and welcomes game makers, digital creators and playful artists from all over the world. Following a theme, the festival tells a story, connecting one piece to another and inviting visitors to engage into multiple worlds.

The festival explores its theme through the multiple voices of the artists presented and creates a space for the public to react and engage with one another. The festival presents immersive and interactive exhibitions, film screenings, a selection of workshops and talks and live performances. The festival is a space to play, meet, experience, share and collaborate.

The Overkill 2024 is curated by Marie Janin and Aike Lütkemöller from Sickhouse alongside playful curator Zuraida Buter and artist researcher Erik Peters.

Theme 2024:

Radical Joy Resistance

Triggered by a feeling of powerlessness in a world that seems wrapped in violence, The Overkill festival is looking into the role of play within activism, the place joy can take in times of great crisis and the power of pleasure in movement of resistance. The festival is wondering what are the (digital) tools, the (virtual) places, the encounters, the (online) gatherings we can create to give each other courage and build new lines of defence. The program will create room for the voices that we don’t hear, open its space for listening, to speak up, to share and try together.
The Overkill invites playful artists to engage with us in the troubles and help us activate disruptive movements, may it be small, loud, temporary or transformative.

Opening:

This year, the start of The Overkill is a Happening, a party, a manifestation! through movement, we take over the public space in a playful intervention.
Inspired by silly walks, street raves, children games & playful actions. We want to show ourselves, in all our colours, joy and diversity. For our voices to be heard.

The program starts with a performance from LAS TESIS in front of the city hall/Stadhuis. This sung choreography ‘Resistance, Or The vindication Of A Collective Right’ is created and performed with a group of local women, that worked together for 3 intensive days. Following, we gather togther to march joyfully from the city center to the venue of the festival. Bring something noisy! We will gather in the Perfroamnce Factory, where the exhibition and the music program are waiting for us after a few words of our curators team.
