SUMMARY:Notgames Fest 2013
DESCRIPTION:After the great success in 2011 and right in time for the big games events in the city\, the Notgames Fest returns to Cologne with a five days exhibition curated by Tale of Tales and the Cologne Game Lab. \n\nFrom the website: \nIf games form the top of an iceberg\, notgames provide the remainder. Videogames are an incredibly versatile creative medium. Beyond the confines of competitive play\, a wealth of experiences awaits us. From deep psychological probing to whimsical lighthearted joy\, this year´s Notgames Fest intends to illustrate the breadth of human existence captured in interactive art. No more hiding behind the young age of the medium or despairing about humanity’s addiction to empty fun. It is time to wield this formidable tool for the pursuit of beauty in its myriad forms.\nMichael Samyn\, Tale of Tales  \n\nNOTGAMES FEST 2013\nAugust 19-23 at the Cologne Game Lab \nAfter the great success in 2011 and right in time for the big games events in the city\, the Notgames Fest returns to Cologne with a five days exhibition curated by Tale of Tales and the Cologne Game Lab. \nIn addition to the main exhibition and social events\, this year´s Notgames Fest will feature an expo-playground for advanced prototypes where game designers can show their work-in-progress to a broader public.

SUMMARY:Playful 2012
DESCRIPTION:“Playful is a one-day conference all about games\, play\, interaction\, behaviour and everything that comes with looking at the world through fun eyes.” \n\n \nFrom the eventbrite ticket page: \nThis is Playful’s fifth year\, and the loose theme is DIY – more punk\, less spirit levels. Greg and Richard are ageing punks in the making\, and have asked a wide range of the world’s most advanced creative minds and mouths to give us their take\, their stories\, their aspirations\, inspirations\, ideas and insults. \nIt’s a conference for planners\, spanners\, designers\, gamers\, artists\, makers\, breakers\, illustrators\, poets\, developers\, writers\, troll hunters\, weavrs. Do you work with things? Do you prefer when those things are unique\, fun\, unforgettable things? Then Playful is for you. \nThe theme is the flip-side of last year. 2011 was about what ‘now’ was supposed to be like\, and how that didn’t feature jetpacks or personal pods filmed in symmetrically composed shots bathed in sterile white light and Ligeti. \nThe thing about NOW is that it’s happening all the time\, and there are a lot of people doing it their own way\, doing it themselves\, doing it together. If you don’t like what is out there\, do it yourself. We’ve picked people to speak who have unique perspectives\, and accents. \nIt’s created and curated by the folks at Mudlark. Good honest Northern(ish) folks who make games\, apps and story things out of data. Human things for human hands and minds\, but made out of machines. \nWebsite: http://www.thisisplayful.com \n\n

SUMMARY:Babycastles - Cyborg Arcade Workshop
DESCRIPTION:A proper indie games arcade like Babycastles in Rotterdam\, The Netherlands?\nIt looks like it is going to happen!\nThe brilliant WORM organization brings the famous Babycastles crew to Rotterdam and have them do a workshop for creating game arcade cabinets. \nFrom the event post: \nJoin Kunal Gupta (Babycasltes)\, Syed Salahuddin (Babycastles)\, Thu Tran (Food Party / Girl Talk)\, Neil Fridd (Terror Pigeon Dance Revolt) and give birth to a litter of cyborg arcade cabinets. We will combine independent games from local Dutch and French game developers\, large stuffed animals\, chef knives\, colorful duct tape\, assorted blinking electronics\, and the virus-writing windows scripting software “AutoHotkey”\, and we will emerge with a new independent video games arcade in Rotterdam. \nThis hands-on lesson hopes to teach and encourage techiques that help transform a pile of material\, electronics\, and games into a social machine that is prepared for the unforeseen ways creative people might enjoy video games. \nJoining the workshop also gives you free entrance to an afterparty featuring performances by Terror Pigeon Dance Revolt and a DJ-set by Marcus McBride\, among others\, and of course it makes you one of the first contributors to this new initiative for creative coding and independent videogame development in the city of Rotterdam! \nRead more about WORM and the event here: http://www.worm.org/home/view/event/1801
