SUMMARY:The Overkill 2025
DESCRIPTION:The Overkill is a playful art\, games and film festival focused on the impact of digital culture on our society. The festival showcases a selection of interactive and participative art installations\, indie/arthouse games\, presents an alternative film program\, experimental live performances and activities such as workshops\, network meet-ups\, talks\, hybrid symposium \nTheme 2025: Return to Dreamland\, From #CalmTok to Rest as Resistance \nIn 2025 following the progress of our reflection on play and activism\, in the context of a hyper productive society\, long conflicts\, climate catastrophes\, engulfing A.I\, we want to take the risk\, the counter intuitive move\, the challenge to stay in bed\, under the blanket\, heads in the pillow. If new technologies infiltrate our beds to transform it into data to be mined\, XR technologies\, video games and virtual environments are also relevant media when delving into dreamworlds. This new edition wants to be another chapter of resistance where we self-organise to wander\, dream\, let our subconscious meet\, invite our nightmares in… \nThe year program of Sickhouse and its main guest artists will be the leading process to develop the research and the selection for the festival.

SUMMARY:Now Play This 2025
DESCRIPTION:Now Play This is a festival of experimental game design and playful art running at Somerset House in London\, showcasing interactive and playful work as part of the London Games Festival. \nThis year\, Now Play This presents Folk Games: The Stories We Play Together — we’ll be exploring how communities get together to create\, reinterpret\, and adapt the rules of play. Join us for a hands-on programme featuring inspiring talks\, workshops\, and playful sessions. \n  \n\nNow Play This started in 2015 as an experiment for us and for Somerset House. A way to show that games had already moved past the “but is it art” conversation and was forming complex interrogations into all sorts of spaces. Over the years we’ve grown from a couple of rooms and a couple of days\, to an expansive nine day festival of games\, workshops\, talks\, walks and a conference! Co-founded by Holly Gramazio and V Buckenham with support from Sophie Sampson and Jo Summers\, the team has grown and changed over the years.

SUMMARY:Talk & Play (Berlin - April)
DESCRIPTION:Talk & Play is a free event organised since 2013 by BerlinGameScene.com\, taking place every two months\, that provides the opportunity to game enthusiasts\, players and makers to meet and exchange knowledge in a friendly\, relaxed and safe environment. \nEverybody’s welcome\, regardless of their background and knowledge level: if you like games\, we’ll make sure you have a good time! Important: this is NOT an event only aimed at developers! \nThe event is structured in two parts: \n– TALK: Short game-related presentations + announcements from the community \n– PLAY: All participants are welcome to bring games they’ve made or are still working on – a perfect opportunity to discover and play new games\, collect feedback and\, who knows?\, maybe find collaborators for future projects \nOur Safe Space Policy encourages the behaviour at Talk & Play. We request that everyone who is affiliated with and participates to the event honours it. \n* Note about the June 2025 edition: this year we’re going to celebrate 50 editions of Talk & Play so we might do something special to celebrate\, possibly a bigger event at a different venue. Because of this\, the date of the June edition might change.

After allowing space and time to make our games in downpour\, we will come back together to discuss how we have reflected on identity in our games. We will also create a collaborative Drive folder so that each of us can upload our games and play each other’s games. \nBio: Jugar Juegitos and Resistència Videolúdica are two cultural anticapitalist collectives from Galicia and Catalonia dedicated to the reflection\, exhibition\, critique\, and connection of and around video games in our local communities. Our goal is to explore video games as cultural objects through an interdisciplinary lens. We have organized cultural activities such as the “Club de joc Wholesome” from Resistència Videolúdica and the “Jugar Jueguitos” exhibition from JugarJueguitos. \nwebsites : \nResistència Videolúdica & JugarJueguitos \nA Tiny Talk About Tiny Tools \n\n\nJoin Nathalie Lawhead for a short inspiring show-and-tell of tiny game engines and small tools! They are passionate about the electronic world\, cyberspace\, broken systems\, the profound poetry of computer glitches\, error art\, desktop pets\, weird freeware\, and the beautiful existential horror of our digital realm. \nArtist’s website \n\n\n\n\nsok-worlds\, sokpop and other sok-stories \n\n\nAran will talk about sok-worlds: a game where you make and explore 3d collage worlds. Together with the audience he’ll explore weird\, funny and artsy sok-worlds! After a leisurely stroll in sok-worlds\, he’ll yap about how the way Sokpop operates has given him a lot of creative freedom! \nBio: Aran Koning is a game designer and part of Utrecht-based videogame collective Sokpop. They are best known for releasing a new game every month through their Patreon\, and they’ve made over 100 games since 2018! \nSokpop\nIG Sokpop: https://www.instagram.com/sokpopco\nWebsite: https://sokpop.co/ \nAran Koning\nIG Aran Koning: https://www.instagram.com/arankoning\nWebsite: http://www.aran-koning.com/ \nPolished vs ‘Primitive’ – Resistance through multilingual visual styles \n\n\nA brief talk about a big topic: how to (re)claim space in videogame development. Just like any other language\, visual styles impact power relations. This talk offers inspiration for and examples of independent and individual game designers who appropriate mainstream visual styles and introduce new and alternative visual styles to make themselves heard. \nBio : Afra Willems is an artist and researcher interested in videogame aesthetics. She works in Enschede at Saxion University of Applied Sciences for the research group Ethics & Technology and the Creative Media & Game Technologies course. \n(re-)Act through Playful Resistance in Digital Spaces with Jisoo Lim \n\n\nThis interactive talk\, “(re-)Act through Playful Resistance in Digital Spaces\,” provides guidance on incorporating playful elements into digital environments to foster activism and resistance. Participants will understand how to design interactive digital spaces that convey social messages in an engaging and creative manner. The session combines theoretical insights with small hands-on activities to create a unique approach to digital activism. \nwebsite’s artist \nPrototyping with Touch and Intimacy \n\n\nClaire Kwong will speak about her games which encourage people to move and touch. Then\, participants can explore new ways of playing with touch together! \nBio: Claire Kwong connects art and technology to make people move. The Quiet Year is a storytelling and map-drawing game in which players take on the role of a community that is struggling to rebuild their home after a catastrophe. It is “part roleplaying game\, part cartographic poetry.” By drawing cards\, answering questions\, having conversations\, and sketching a map together\, everyone at the session will be able to take part in our game of The Quiet Year and embody the processes and dynamics of rebuilding and creating community after social collapse.

SUMMARY:The Overkill 2024
DESCRIPTION:The Overkill is the playful festival celebrating indie and arthouse games\, interactive arts and alternative films within a cultural and social context. Interdisciplinary\, experimental and international\, The Overkill presents and welcomes game makers\, digital creators and playful artists from all over the world. Following a theme\, the festival tells a story\, connecting one piece to another and inviting visitors to engage into multiple worlds. \nThe festival explores its theme through the multiple voices of the artists presented and creates a space for the public to react and engage with one another. The festival presents immersive and interactive exhibitions\, film screenings\, a selection of workshops and talks and live performances. The festival is a space to play\, meet\, experience\, share and collaborate. \nThe Overkill 2024 is curated by Marie Janin and Aike Lütkemöller from Sickhouse alongside playful curator Zuraida Buter and artist researcher Erik Peters. \nTheme 2024: \nRadical Joy Resistance \nTriggered by a feeling of powerlessness in a world that seems wrapped in violence\, The Overkill festival is looking into the role of play within activism\, the place joy can take in times of great crisis and the power of pleasure in movement of resistance. The festival is wondering what are the (digital) tools\, the (virtual) places\, the encounters\, the (online) gatherings we can create to give each other courage and build new lines of defence. The program will create room for the voices that we don’t hear\, open its space for listening\, to speak up\, to share and try together.\nThe Overkill invites playful artists to engage with us in the troubles and help us activate disruptive movements\, may it be small\, loud\, temporary or transformative. \n—- \nThe Overkill festival takes place over several locations : \nPerformance factory\, Hall Zuid : Hoge Bothofstraat 39F\, 7511 ZA Enschede\nBlackBrick : Hoge Bothofstraat 31F\, 7511ZA Enschede (not yet on google maps)\nConcordia : Langestraat 56\, 7511 HC Enschede(film program of Friday and Saturday)\nVestzak theater : Walstraat 35\, 7511 GG Enschede(Playful Friday) \nWednesday 20 : Secret Gathering (on invite\, for participants and volunteers only)\nThursday 21 : Expo open + Official opening\nFriday 22 : Expo + Playful Friday with talks and workshops for students & professionals\nSaturday & Sunday 23 & 24 : Expo + activities for everyone \nProgram: \nExpo: \n\nFrom the Main Square – Pedro Harris\nNew Suns – Antigoni Tsagkaropoulou\nBetween – Claire Kwong\nDance Poem Revolution – Melanie Hoff\nharri kanta – Juliette Lizotte\nJoystick – Madison Bycroft\nMbombo: Dream Echoes – Sondi\nViolent Violins exposed – Babak Ahteshamipour\nClaiming Space – Questions Collective\nCasual Games for Protesters – Molleindustria & Harry Josephine Giles\nMarch Together – Simona Marioano\nPerfect World – Michael Overton Brown\nThe Bride Who Could Not Stop Crying – Afrah Shafiq\nThe New York Times Simulator – Molleindustria\nUm Al-Zaytoun – Rafif Kalantan & Ashraf Abi Said\nStatera – Randy Querreveld\, Rick van Leeuwen and Denis Dvorkovyy\nAtuel – Matajuegos\nAnarquia – Alberto Rico – presented by Jugar Juegitos and Resistència Videolúdica\nGay Boy – Paramo.Yermo – presented by Jugar Juegitos and Resistència Videolúdica\nOjancanu –  Dobra Studios – presented by Jugar Juegitos and Resistència Videolúdica\nTo all the rocks that raised me – Carlos Cortés García – presented by Jugar Juegitos and Resistència Videolúdica\nSplit your dirty adventure – Ronia – presented by Jugar Juegitos and Resistència Videolúdica\n\nWorkshops: \n\nConsensual Hacking – Melanie Hoff\nPlaying with the Master’s tool – Noam Yongrak Son\nWindwerk (Wind Works) – Question Collective\nLarping and Player Agency – Jana Romanova\nPlaying Protest Games – Jana Romanova\nZine Creating Session – Nathalie Lawhead\nSickfem\, Having Fun with Synthesizers – Jack Noise\n\nEvents / Performances \n\nOpening: March of Resistance\nResistance or the vindication of a collective right –  LASTESIS\nPulse Friction – RADVLAD\nPlayful Friday Curated by Zuraida Buter – see line-up here.\nUnfolding\, intergalactic yoga – Anne Fehres and Luke Conroy\n\n  \nOpening: \nThis year\, the start of The Overkill is a Happening\, a party\, a manifestation! through movement\, we take over the public space in a playful intervention.\nInspired by silly walks\, street raves\, children games & playful actions. SUMMARY:The Overkill 2023
DESCRIPTION:The Overkill 2023 – Theme: The Outburst of the Digital Swamp \nWelcome to the Meta-swamp \nRather than draining the (digital)wetlands\, The Overkill wishes to design a route through its intoxicating everglades. Artists navigating through the post-digital now think of the swamp as a scape of hybridization\, material transformation\, monstrous mutation – a new space for agency. The swamp is the site inhabited by amphibious entities\, exiled variations of the self\, a liquefying space expanding on to different layers. The festival invites these hybrid and mixed media artists accustomed to the porous and dripping networks. Borrowing from memetic cultures\, cyber fashion\, slime aesthetics\, deflated ethno-futurisms\, 3D morphologies\, and syncretic fairy tales\, these networks are to be navigated in adventurous ways\, taking on a role and playing on new connections. \nAbout The Overkill Festival \nThe Overkill festival is a playful art festival celebrating art house video games\, interactive art and films as tools to engage in social challenges. The program of the festival regroups an exhibition\, workshops\, talks\, experimental live performances and screenings. In 2023 The Overkill festival is also the stage of a LARP (live action role play) that each visitor can be part of.The program brings local\, national and international artists and creators together and is curated by Aike Lütkemöller and Marie Janin from Sickhouse with the support of guest curator Kostis Stafylakis\, playful curator Zuraida Buter and artist researcher Erik Peters. The LARP is a co-creation of Kostis Stafylakis and Theo Triantafyllidis.

Feral Vector is fundamentally about outside influences\, accessible tools\, and the fringes of game design – because that’s where the interesting stuff begins”

SUMMARY:The Overkill 2019
DESCRIPTION:Game Festival \nFrom the website: \nThe Overkill is a playful festival which regroups an art exhibition\, a selection of indie games (+ retro games + a mini LAN)\, an alternative movie program\, live performances and many activities such as workshops\, masterclasses\, talks… all selected around our theme and presented together in an original and immersive setting. \nThe Overkill is an open platform\, a flexible space for creative minds to meet and an intense time to share thoughts and experiences. With our partners we are bringing together artists\, creative thinkers\, developers\, students and professionals to explore the edges of the gaming culture. \nWe use popular culture to debate social issues in an accessible way. \nPlaying is the core element of our event\, we believe game is a source of socializing\, a diplomatic tool\, a stress releaser\, a way to learn or master things and an amazing way to spend our time! Our visitors are invited to participate\, try out\, watch debate and create\, transforming the festival and their experience. It is our intention to present art and artists in playful ways\, looking for new and real encounters. \nTheme \nUnder the theme ‘Modding Realities (a combination of terms from what seems two opposite environments: the gaming world and the real world)\, the program of the festival questions the meaning of reality in a digital society. A society in which humanity is computerized and undergoing a technological (r)evolution and where virtual and real can’t be opposed any longer. \nMods in gaming are _alteration that players or fans make to change one or more aspects of a game\, such as how it looks or behaves. Reality (oxford dictionary)is _the state of things as they actually exist\, as opposed to an idealistic or notional idea of them. Inspired by this process\, the program of the festival looks into how digital culture and gaming transform our experience of reality\, where virtual and real can’t be opposed any longer. \n  \n
