SUMMARY:Black Box CPH VIII
DESCRIPTION:Welcome to BlackBox Cph – a festival for experimental role play at the centre of Copenhagen. \nAt Blackbox Cph you can choose between a number of larps of about 3-4 hours’ duration. The larps will apply theatrical lighting and sound for controlling the play and several of them will be experimenting with other theatrical techniques. This creates a unique form of role play that has come to be known as black box role play. \nThe larps for Blackbox Cph are designed to be plug-and-play. This means that the demands for you as a player are at a minimum. To play you just have to sign up\, and when you come to the larp remember to bring a basic costume\, which consists of a pair of black socks\, black pants\, and a black t-shirt. \nThe designers of the larps will take care of all additional preparation. The designers have total power over their larps\, they will be in charge of plots\, roles\, workshop\, instructions\, as well as controlling theatrical lights and sound\, with a little help from us. \nAs a player all you have to do is be ready to follow instructions and give it your all when the spotlight hits you. \nBlackbox Cph is organized by Gnist in cooperation with HusetKBH and TeaterHuset. \nWebsite: http://blackbox-cph.dk/?page_id=10&lang=en \nFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/blackboxcph/

SUMMARY:The Overkill 2018
DESCRIPTION:The Overkill is a 48 hours nonstop festival which regroups an art exhibition\, a selection of indie games\, an alternative movie program\, live performance and many activities such as workshops\, master class\, talks… all selected around our theme and presented together in an original and immersive setting. \nThe Overkill is an open platform\, a flexible space for creative minds to meet and an intense time to share thoughts and experience. With our partners we are bringing together artists\, creative thinkers\, developers\, students and professionals to explore the edges of the gaming culture. Playing is the core element of our event\, we believe game is a source of socializing\, a diplomatic tool\, a stress releaser\, a way to learn or master things and an amazing way to spend our time!  Our visitors are invited to participate\, try out\, watch debate and create\, transforming the festival and his experience. It is our intention to present art and artists in a playful way\, looking for new and real encounters. It is also our intention to use a popular tool (video games) and make our public more aware of its content\, its power and its artistic manipulations.

SUMMARY:PLAYRAUM: Urban Gaming Festival 2018
DESCRIPTION:Quoted from the website (in Dutch) \n\nWie wil het niet: voor één dag Super Mario zijn. Alles is beginner-proof.

SUMMARY:Feral Vector 2018
DESCRIPTION:Feral Vector is a festival about making games and gamelike things. \nPreviously we fixed up the Doom Piano. We did Curiosity Live with an actual cube of concrete. We put on a screening of Andy Kelly’s Other Places. Every year we revel in the beauty of nature\, videogames\, and virtual worlds. SUMMARY:Pro Juventute Play Festival 2018
DESCRIPTION:Play Conference «Playable Cities» & Pop up Play Action \n\n\n\n\nHow can public urban areas be organised to improve play for children and adults? Can play be used in the public domain as a catalyst for urban development? How can play instigate participative processes of appropriation? How can playgrounds become spaces for the live culture of play and encounter? Can playgrounds also be challenging and playable for adults? \nPlay is rarely actively promoted in urban areas and is even more rarely integrated into the actual urban plan- ning process. Yet play offers a wide range of resources\, methods\, processes of appropriation and atmospheric potential for change so as to radically improve cities. The Pro Juventute Play Festival 2018 should support the development of cities of play and further develop discus- sion of the role of play in urban development processes. The Play Festival 2018 is composed of a conference on the topic of «Playable Cities» and a Play Event for World Play Day 2018 whereby the right to play is celebrated at an international level.

SUMMARY:Playful Arts Sessions: Wanderlust
DESCRIPTION:Prepare yourself for a journey through the city by night and let your intuition be your guide.\nPlayful Arts Sessions is an exciting evening where you can get acquainted with leading and emerging artists at the intersection of visual arts\, performing arts and playful design.\n13 December 7PM-10.30PM: Two playful urban explorations with international artists Aïda Gomez\, Thom Kiraly and Sebastian Quack + aftertalk led by Michiel van de Weerthof (Soundtreks – Weerthof & Pagée).\n\nDrift Club\nThom Kiraly and Sebastian Quack will take you on a drift\, a playful way to collaboratively explore urban landscapes on foot and take a break from everyday life. Sometimes we move slow\, sometimes we move fast. The aim is to create a deep\, shared experience of exploration and discovery.\nGuy Debord\, founder of the Situationistische Internationale\, introduced the drifting idea in 1956 and has inspired many artists since. Kiraly en Quack have been drifting through cities all over Europe\, in all types of weather and all times of day. \nDrift Club website: http://driftclub.cc \nUrban Exploration\nThe second urban exploration will be guided by Aïda Gómez. Working with language games\, crossword puzzles and the playful replacement of social codes in our everyday environment\, Aïda Gómez finds a way of capturing and challenging the view of passersby\, turning them into playfellows in her self-appointed playgrounds in the streets of Madrid and Berlin. By placing posters with word search games on billboards\, weaving hearts into fences or playing Tetris with missing pieces in a subway station panelling\, the artist uses simple yet subversive techniques and what she calls non-violent materials to reveal hidden treasures. \nPROGRAM\n19.00 Doors open\n19.15 Drift Club – Thom Kiraly en Sebastian Quack*\n20.30 Urban exploration – Aïda Gomez*\n21.45 Conversations with the artists & the audience led by moderator Michiel van de Weerthof\n22.30 End \n* we start at Willem Twee but cannot know the exact location after that. Sebastian is a founding member of the network Invisible Playground and curates Playpublik\, an international festival for playful public spaces. He regularly teaches\, gives talks and consults organizations on how to engage playfully with the world around them. Sebastian lives in Berlin. \nSebastian has worked on a number of ground-breaking playful projects including Area/Code’s plundr\, the world’s first location-based PC game. Notable work with Invisible Playground has included projects for Victoria & Albert Museum\, HAU Theater\, Oerol Festival\, Metropolis Festival\, Aichi Triennale\, Urbane Künste Ruhr – and Turtle Wushu\, a game that involves a tiny turtle sitting on your hand. One of his newest projects\, Playful Commons\, explores what kind of licenses administrators and users of public spaces can agree on when it comes to allowing play to take place.\nhttp://sebastianquack.com/ \nThom Kiraly\nUsually tries to get people to play games through organizing events. He is also an occasional spoken word artist and poet. He lives in Malmö\, Sweden. \n\n  \n\nThe evening is an initiative by Playful Arts Festival\, a collaboration between playful culture curator Zuraida Buter (zo-ii) and art organization Wave of Tomorrow\, based in Willem Twee. \nWe gratefully thank the Willem Twee and the Municipality of ’s-Hertogenbosch for supporting the program. \nPhoto: Very First Bern Drift

SUMMARY:Making the City Playable 2017
DESCRIPTION:From the website: \nAll over the world\, play is being embraced as an antidote to the anonymity of the urban environment. This one day conference will explore the theme of the Playable City and how public space\, creativity and imagination combines to create unexpected interactions and a new kind of dialogue. \nWe have gathered together an international mix of artists\, academics\, policy makers and producers to speak about their transformative work in cities from Montreal to Mexico City\, Lagos to Copenhagen. They will explore the social and cultural issues that play is helping them to address\, the challenges of making playful projects a reality and who feels welcome/able to access public space. \nOur programme will feature opportunities for networking\, debate and discussion\, as well as bespoke Playable City experiences in interesting locations throughout the centre of the city. These activities will be designed exclusively for our delegates by the talented cohort joining us on Creative Producers International\, Watershed’s new global talent development programme. Attendees will also get a sneak peek at the prototypes of upcoming Playable City commissions from Hirsch and Mann and Guerrilla Dance Project. Join in on the process and give us your feedback. \nConfirmed speakers include: \n\nMiguel Sicart\, Play scholar\nPascale Daigle\, Programme Director of Montreal’s Quartier des Spectacles\nDaniel Hirschmann\, Founder of Hirsch and Mann\, Watershed’s current Playable City Award winners\nErin Walsh\, Head of City Strategies at Future Cities Catapult\nStuart Nolan\, Research magician\nInua Ellams\, Founder of Midnight Run\nJen Stein\, UWE Professor of Design Futures\nHere’s more information on the sessions: \n\n\n\nSession One: Who Can Play?\n\n\n\nSpeakers: Clare Reddington\, Miguel Sicart\, Stuart Nolan\, Erin Walsh \nProjects invoking play are more popular than ever before and are taking place all over the world. As the form matures\, this session will interrogate the current state of play and ask questions about how play is perceived\, what it means for human behaviour\, and who playful interactions are designed for. \n\n\n\nSession Two: How We Play\n\n\n\nSpeakers: Hilary O’Shaughnessy\, Daniel Hirschmann\, Pascale Daigle\, Inua Ellams\, Jen Stein \nWe have seen a global movement of playful city interventions which fuse art\, technology and urban innovation to engage with citizens and reclaim public space. An international mix of artists\, producers\, academics and policy makers will come together to share some practical insights from their work\, and the discuss the environmental and cultural concerns they must address in very different places. \n\n\n\nSession Three: Let’s Play\n\n\n\nSpeakers/leaders: the Creative Producers International cohort \nDelegates will meet the fifteen city change makers from our new global talent development programme Creative Producers International\, as they participate in a series of playful interventions across the city. Our Creative Producers will design these activities exclusively for our conference during a residential lab here at Watershed\, and they will explore issues important to their own practice and cities. \n\n\n\nSession Four: Where We Play\n\n\n\nSpeakers: Claire Doherty\, Clorinda Romo\, Olamide Udoma-Ejorh\, Seiichi Saito \nAcross the world\, including here in Bristol\, activism is on the rise. We will examine the relationship between play and activism\, and how those creating playful interventions are responding to an increasingly political environment in which public space feels contested. Practitioners from Mexico\, Nigeria and the UK will discuss their experiences of play as activism\, and the lessons that can be shared internationally. \nWe will provide BSL and live captioning to accompany our all conference speakers. To ensure all participants experience a fully playful afternoon please let us know about any access requirements\, using the typeform link included in your booking confirmation. \nAny questions? Contact playablecity@watershed.co.uk \nMaking The City Playable Conference is produced by Watershed and is part of the Festival of the Future City. It is supported by Arts Council England\, British Council and UWE Bristol as part of Creative Producers International.
