SUMMARY:New Horizons - De Kunst Achter Games
DESCRIPTION:New Horizons – De Kunst Achter Games (the art behind games) \nExhibition on the mutual influence of game art\, contemporary art & pop culture. Part of Next Gen Art Event 2014. \nFrom the website: \n\nBy displaying games and other art forms next to each other\, the New Horizons exhibition in the Fries Museum is one of the first that really shows how artists from various disciplines inspire each other and how they\, sometimes unconsciously\, borrow from art history. The impossible mazes from M.C Escher return in games like Echochrome and Monument Valley. An artist like Cory Arcangel transforms classic videogames to abandoned landscapes. In the exhibition we show work of a number of leading studio’s\, like Naughty Dog\, BioWare\, thatgamecompany and DICE. To get in mood\, here is a selection of artworks in the exhibition. The New Horizons exhibition is on show from November 21 until March 22 in the Fries Museum in Leeuwarden\, the Netherlands. \n\nRead a Next Gen Art Event & exhibition report on gamesindustry.biz: http://www.gamesindustry.biz/articles/2015-01-12-next-gen-art-event-taking-video-game-art-seriously

SUMMARY:Playpublik Kraków 2014
DESCRIPTION:Festival for Playful Public Spaces in Kraków\, Poland. Curated by Invisible Playground. \nTheme: Momentary States \nFrom the website: \n\nTake a moment and consider your world as a playground. Think of the busy intersection you cross every day and the building you live in. The majestic church or the shady bar you might visit on the weekend. Follow a path from the corner of the web you think only you know about to your town’s public square and back. Go to work\, if you can. Talk to a loved one on the phone. Walk from the Yoga studio to your favorite very old museum\, then stop by the logistics center that sends you your packages and\, finally\, jump! All the way to mars (or parliament\, or prison). \nThere’s something happening on every part of the playground\, isn’t there?\nBut are you in on the game? \nThis fall\, a new version of Playpublik will take place in Kraków\, Poland. Initiated by Goethe-Institut Krakau as part of the project SPIELTRIEB! and curated by Invisible Playground\, the festival celebrates\, explores\, questions – in public\, through play – what it means to live together in our shared world. Yes\, really: as adults who play. \nWe don’t know about you\, but we are not so sure about public space anymore. What it’s for\, what we want from it\, where to find it. Same goes for privacy. Who knows the rules and systems that govern how we communicate\, commute\, work\, play\, love? \nBut we do know this: Together we can make new rules and enter different states\, at least for a moment. We can feel them\, test them\, know about them\, discuss them. Let’s look at ourselves\, each other and the surrounding world from inside them\, then decide if we want to throw away or keep them. Anyone can do it\, and it’s fun! \nA great way to do this is by playing\, making\, and talking about games. This is why Playpublik consists of three formats: Games\, Workshops\, and Conversations. \n\nOpen Call for projects. Submission Deadline extended to 17 August 2014.

SUMMARY:gameZfestival 2.0 (2014)
DESCRIPTION:Games and game design festival in Zurich. \n\n\ngameZfestival is a festival for game design and games. The initial Festival was all about game mechanics.  This year’s dominant topic is “play together”. The first video games were all multiplayer games\, from Spacewar and TennisForTwo to Pong. The game was the Tabula Rasa that featured odd rules. With Breakout the opponent was replaced by levels. And video games ignited the second stage and developed further on. Today\, the multiplayer is back in all its variants: Playing together in the living room or over the Internet in MMOS. \nHighlights of this year are: Dutch designer Joost van Dongen\, who has developed the extraordinary Multiplayer game Awesomenauts for Ronimo Games. The Canada Swiss Daniel Lutz\, who produced the game Hitman Go  for Square Enix in Montreal. The Swede Krister Karlsson with a revival of an Amiga Game of 1993 and the London German Reiner Knizia as trendsetting inventor of board and card games. \n\n\n“Play Together” addresses the phenomenon in various ways. The exhibition “1st vs. Multiplayer” shows the evolution through the decades of game design\, from Pong to Altered Beast. The program features three days with talks\, panel discussions and OpenMics. Friday is dedicated to the game arcades and the 80s and 90s games. Saturday immerses you in the indie scene. And on Sunday\, we proceed to the classic multiplayer of board games. One thing is clear: It’s always about multiplayer game mechanics and that does not necessarily just mean “play against each other”. An exception however is planned too: Saturday afternoon is all about the topic Selfie game. And there is even an award for the weirdest #Selfiegame14. \nFestival programme \ngameZfestival 2.0 is three days of talks\, international guests\, panel discussions and OpenMics on the topic “Play Together!”. The exhibition “1st vs. Multiplayer” is open daily\, admission is free. Friday evening is dedicated to the videogame arcade and the 80s/90s games. Saturday is the day for the indie scene and a multiplayer night. And on Sunday we continue with hybrid games and the question of transfer of board game to online game or app. \n  \n\n\n\nWebsite: http://www.gamezfestival.ch/\nTwitter: @gamezfestival\nFB Event
