SUMMARY:The Overkill 2025
DESCRIPTION:The Overkill is a playful art\, games and film festival focused on the impact of digital culture on our society. The festival showcases a selection of interactive and participative art installations\, indie/arthouse games\, presents an alternative film program\, experimental live performances and activities such as workshops\, network meet-ups\, talks\, hybrid symposium \nTheme 2025: Return to Dreamland\, From #CalmTok to Rest as Resistance \nIn 2025 following the progress of our reflection on play and activism\, in the context of a hyper productive society\, long conflicts\, climate catastrophes\, engulfing A.I\, we want to take the risk\, the counter intuitive move\, the challenge to stay in bed\, under the blanket\, heads in the pillow. If new technologies infiltrate our beds to transform it into data to be mined\, XR technologies\, video games and virtual environments are also relevant media when delving into dreamworlds. This new edition wants to be another chapter of resistance where we self-organise to wander\, dream\, let our subconscious meet\, invite our nightmares in… \nThe year program of Sickhouse and its main guest artists will be the leading process to develop the research and the selection for the festival.

Their projects often promote play amongst adults and children in provocative and unexpected ways. After allowing space and time to make our games in downpour\, we will come back together to discuss how we have reflected on identity in our games. We will also create a collaborative Drive folder so that each of us can upload our games and play each other’s games. \nBio: Jugar Juegitos and Resistència Videolúdica are two cultural anticapitalist collectives from Galicia and Catalonia dedicated to the reflection\, exhibition\, critique\, and connection of and around video games in our local communities. Our goal is to explore video games as cultural objects through an interdisciplinary lens. We have organized cultural activities such as the “Club de joc Wholesome” from Resistència Videolúdica and the “Jugar Jueguitos” exhibition from JugarJueguitos. \nwebsites : \nResistència Videolúdica & JugarJueguitos \nA Tiny Talk About Tiny Tools \n\n\nJoin Nathalie Lawhead for a short inspiring show-and-tell of tiny game engines and small tools! We will talk about the abundant space of small alternatives and the uses they have. \nBio: Nathalie Lawhead is an award-winning solo designer of interactive art and video games. They are passionate about the electronic world\, cyberspace\, broken systems\, the profound poetry of computer glitches\, error art\, desktop pets\, weird freeware\, and the beautiful existential horror of our digital realm. \nArtist’s website \n\n\n\n\nsok-worlds\, sokpop and other sok-stories \n\n\nAran will talk about sok-worlds: a game where you make and explore 3d collage worlds. Together with the audience he’ll explore weird\, funny and artsy sok-worlds! After a leisurely stroll in sok-worlds\, he’ll yap about how the way Sokpop operates has given him a lot of creative freedom! \nBio: Aran Koning is a game designer and part of Utrecht-based videogame collective Sokpop. They are best known for releasing a new game every month through their Patreon\, and they’ve made over 100 games since 2018! \nSokpop\nIG Sokpop: https://www.instagram.com/sokpopco\nWebsite: https://sokpop.co/ \nAran Koning\nIG Aran Koning: https://www.instagram.com/arankoning\nWebsite: http://www.aran-koning.com/ \nPolished vs ‘Primitive’ – Resistance through multilingual visual styles \n\n\nA brief talk about a big topic: how to (re)claim space in videogame development. Just like any other language\, visual styles impact power relations. This talk offers inspiration for and examples of independent and individual game designers who appropriate mainstream visual styles and introduce new and alternative visual styles to make themselves heard. \nBio : Afra Willems is an artist and researcher interested in videogame aesthetics. She works in Enschede at Saxion University of Applied Sciences for the research group Ethics & Technology and the Creative Media & Game Technologies course. \n(re-)Act through Playful Resistance in Digital Spaces with Jisoo Lim \n\n\nThis interactive talk\, “(re-)Act through Playful Resistance in Digital Spaces\,” provides guidance on incorporating playful elements into digital environments to foster activism and resistance. Participants will understand how to design interactive digital spaces that convey social messages in an engaging and creative manner. The session combines theoretical insights with small hands-on activities to create a unique approach to digital activism. \nwebsite’s artist \nPrototyping with Touch and Intimacy \n\n\nClaire Kwong will speak about her games which encourage people to move and touch. Then\, participants can explore new ways of playing with touch together! \nBio: Claire Kwong connects art and technology to make people move. She creates immersive environments using projection and motion capture. Her games encourage people to move\, communicate\, and touch. Claire aims to dramatize her own experiences and challenge social boundaries. She lives in New York City. \nWebsite: https://clairekwong.com\nIG: https://www.instagram.com/clairebkwong \nPlaying the Quiet Year \nIn this session\, Pablo Quarta (Atuel\, Matajuegos) will guide the audience through a collective and participatory game of The Quiet Year by Avery Alder. The Quiet Year is a storytelling and map-drawing game in which players take on the role of a community that is struggling to rebuild their home after a catastrophe. It is “part roleplaying game\, part cartographic poetry.” By drawing cards\, answering questions\, having conversations\, and sketching a map together\, everyone at the session will be able to take part in our game of The Quiet Year and embody the processes and dynamics of rebuilding and creating community after social collapse.

SUMMARY:The Overkill 2023
DESCRIPTION:The Overkill 2023 – Theme: The Outburst of the Digital Swamp \nWelcome to the Meta-swamp \nRather than draining the (digital)wetlands\, The Overkill wishes to design a route through its intoxicating everglades. Artists navigating through the post-digital now think of the swamp as a scape of hybridization\, material transformation\, monstrous mutation – a new space for agency. The swamp is the site inhabited by amphibious entities\, exiled variations of the self\, a liquefying space expanding on to different layers. The festival invites these hybrid and mixed media artists accustomed to the porous and dripping networks. Borrowing from memetic cultures\, cyber fashion\, slime aesthetics\, deflated ethno-futurisms\, 3D morphologies\, and syncretic fairy tales\, these networks are to be navigated in adventurous ways\, taking on a role and playing on new connections. \nAbout The Overkill Festival \nThe Overkill festival is a playful art festival celebrating art house video games\, interactive art and films as tools to engage in social challenges. The program of the festival regroups an exhibition\, workshops\, talks\, experimental live performances and screenings. In 2023 The Overkill festival is also the stage of a LARP (live action role play) that each visitor can be part of.The program brings local\, national and international artists and creators together and is curated by Aike Lütkemöller and Marie Janin from Sickhouse with the support of guest curator Kostis Stafylakis\, playful curator Zuraida Buter and artist researcher Erik Peters. The LARP is a co-creation of Kostis Stafylakis and Theo Triantafyllidis.

SUMMARY:The Overkill 2019
DESCRIPTION:Game Festival \nFrom the website: \nThe Overkill is a playful festival which regroups an art exhibition\, a selection of indie games (+ retro games + a mini LAN)\, an alternative movie program\, live performances and many activities such as workshops\, masterclasses\, talks… all selected around our theme and presented together in an original and immersive setting. \nThe Overkill is an open platform\, a flexible space for creative minds to meet and an intense time to share thoughts and experiences. With our partners we are bringing together artists\, creative thinkers\, developers\, students and professionals to explore the edges of the gaming culture. \nWe use popular culture to debate social issues in an accessible way. \nPlaying is the core element of our event\, we believe game is a source of socializing\, a diplomatic tool\, a stress releaser\, a way to learn or master things and an amazing way to spend our time! Our visitors are invited to participate\, try out\, watch debate and create\, transforming the festival and their experience. It is our intention to present art and artists in playful ways\, looking for new and real encounters. \nTheme \nUnder the theme ‘Modding Realities (a combination of terms from what seems two opposite environments: the gaming world and the real world)\, the program of the festival questions the meaning of reality in a digital society. A society in which humanity is computerized and undergoing a technological (r)evolution and where virtual and real can’t be opposed any longer. \nMods in gaming are _alteration that players or fans make to change one or more aspects of a game\, such as how it looks or behaves. Reality (oxford dictionary)is _the state of things as they actually exist\, as opposed to an idealistic or notional idea of them. Inspired by this process\, the program of the festival looks into how digital culture and gaming transform our experience of reality\, where virtual and real can’t be opposed any longer. \n  \n

SUMMARY:PLAYRAUM: Urban Gaming Festival 2018
DESCRIPTION:Quoted from the website (in Dutch) \n\nWie wil het niet: voor één dag Super Mario zijn. Alles is beginner-proof.

SUMMARY:Playful Arts Sessions: Wanderlust
DESCRIPTION:Prepare yourself for a journey through the city by night and let your intuition be your guide.\nPlayful Arts Sessions is an exciting evening where you can get acquainted with leading and emerging artists at the intersection of visual arts\, performing arts and playful design.\n13 December 7PM-10.30PM: Two playful urban explorations with international artists Aïda Gomez\, Thom Kiraly and Sebastian Quack + aftertalk led by Michiel van de Weerthof (Soundtreks – Weerthof & Pagée).\n\nDrift Club\nThom Kiraly and Sebastian Quack will take you on a drift\, a playful way to collaboratively explore urban landscapes on foot and take a break from everyday life. Sometimes we move slow\, sometimes we move fast. The aim is to create a deep\, shared experience of exploration and discovery.\nGuy Debord\, founder of the Situationistische Internationale\, introduced the drifting idea in 1956 and has inspired many artists since. Kiraly en Quack have been drifting through cities all over Europe\, in all types of weather and all times of day. \nDrift Club website: http://driftclub.cc \nUrban Exploration\nThe second urban exploration will be guided by Aïda Gómez. Working with language games\, crossword puzzles and the playful replacement of social codes in our everyday environment\, Aïda Gómez finds a way of capturing and challenging the view of passersby\, turning them into playfellows in her self-appointed playgrounds in the streets of Madrid and Berlin. By placing posters with word search games on billboards\, weaving hearts into fences or playing Tetris with missing pieces in a subway station panelling\, the artist uses simple yet subversive techniques and what she calls non-violent materials to reveal hidden treasures. \nPROGRAM\n19.00 Doors open\n19.15 Drift Club – Thom Kiraly en Sebastian Quack*\n20.30 Urban exploration – Aïda Gomez*\n21.45 Conversations with the artists & the audience led by moderator Michiel van de Weerthof\n22.30 End \n* we start at Willem Twee but cannot know the exact location after that. He regularly teaches\, gives talks and consults organizations on how to engage playfully with the world around them. Sebastian lives in Berlin. \nSebastian has worked on a number of ground-breaking playful projects including Area/Code’s plundr\, the world’s first location-based PC game. Notable work with Invisible Playground has included projects for Victoria & Albert Museum\, HAU Theater\, Oerol Festival\, Metropolis Festival\, Aichi Triennale\, Urbane Künste Ruhr – and Turtle Wushu\, a game that involves a tiny turtle sitting on your hand. One of his newest projects\, Playful Commons\, explores what kind of licenses administrators and users of public spaces can agree on when it comes to allowing play to take place.\nhttp://sebastianquack.com/ \nThom Kiraly\nUsually tries to get people to play games through organizing events. He is also an occasional spoken word artist and poet. SUMMARY:Playful Arts Sessions #1
DESCRIPTION:Interactive Performance evening. \nPlayful Arts Sessions is an exciting evening where you can get acquainted with leading and emerging artists at the intersection of visual arts\, performing arts and playful design. Includes Dinner!\nDuring the first Playful Arts Sessions we dive into the work of artist duos The100Hands (NL)  and Louise Orwin & Eugenie Pastor (UK)\, who both playfully experiment with the relation between the artist and their audience. How far will we go in setting up and act in interactive experiences?\n\nDuring the first half of the evening we meet in a playful way during two performances and a tasteful dinner. During the second half of the evening we will speak with the artists under the guidance of expert moderator Jochem Naafs.\n\nTimetable: \n17.00  Doors open\n17.15   Start program\n17.30  The Loneliness of Crowds – Louise Orwin & Eugénie Pastor\n19.45  Dinner @ Hangop\n20.00 25Feet – the 100Hands\n21.15   Aftertalk with the artists and moderator Jochem Naafs \nTickets*: \n25 Euros: Two performances + dinner\n20 Euros: Two Performances + dinner ( = Early Bird until 18 May) \n*Tickets are for the whole evening including dinner. \n\nInteractive Performances:\nThe Loneliness of Crowds\nby Eugénie Pastor and Louise Orwin\n \nThe Loneliness of Crowds is an immersive experience for 1-2 blindfolded participants. During 10 minutes\, you will be involved in being in a festival environment. Complete with karaoke\, crowdsurfing\, shelter for rain and dancing. Afterwards you will give the same care to other participants. \n25Feet\nby The100Hands\nAt a distance of 25 feet (7.3m) and further people interact among each other mainly as viewers and performers. By placing the audience together with two performers in a square of 25ft2\, everyone – willingly or not – enters each others ‘social space’. From there begins the journey closer and closer\, into ‘personal’ and ‘intimate space’: areas where the most violent and intimate physical interactions happen. \n25 Feet is a sober\, effectively designed\, interactive dance performance about physical proximity and the dynamics between violence and intimacy\, that both happen on closest distance. \nThe Artists:\n\nThe100Hands:\nThe100Hands create interactive dance performances\, mostly site specific\, now and then staged in theaters.\nSince 2014 Jasper Džuki Jelen (NL/SI) and Mojra Vogelnik Škerlj (SI) combine their backgrounds in contemporary dance and architecture to create works that strongly relate to space. The movement vocabulary of this duo sources from partnering and martial arts and fuels an interest in the social\, interactive potential of physical performance formats.\nThe work of The100Hands is presented in many international festivals and is produced in Belgium\, Sweden\, Denmark and Egypt. Its human and physical approach speaks to a wide audience of all ages.\nhttps://the100hands.com/\n\nLouise Orwin (UK) is a live art artist\, researcher\, writer and performer. She has performed her work at various stages and festivals in the UK and beyond. Her work is characterized by brutality\, personal vulnerability and the involvement of the public in intimate experiences. In her work she focuses on the accidental encounter with a stranger. She plays with stereotypical views of the female in popular culture versus her own awkwardness. In her work practice\, she mixes the theatrical with everyday and interrogates the interaction between the creator and her audience.\nHttp://louiseorwin.com/ \nEugénie Pastor (UK) is an artist\, performer\, musician and theatre-maker\, based in London and originally from France. She’s an Associate Artist at Little Bulb Theatre since 2009 and co-devised and performed in many of the company’s award-winning shows\, including: Orpheus\, Squally Showers\, Operation Greenfield\, Sporadical\, and most of Little Bulb’s cabaret and band incarnations. \nShe’s also a freelance performer and theatre-maker\, and has collaborated with Tom Penn\, Edith Tankus\, Glen Neath and David Rosenberg\, and new circus companies Barely Methodical and Camille Boitel / L’Immédiat. Her work has been shown at Battersea Arts Centre\, Soho Theatre\, The Shed / National Theatre\, Salzburg Festival\, West Yorkshire Playhouse\, Millenium Centre Cardiff\, Bristol Old Vic\, Latitude and Wilderness Festivals\, among others.\nhttp://www.eugeniepastor.co.uk/ \nThe Moderator:\nJochem Naafs holds an MA in both New Media Studies and Theatre Studies. He is a lecturer\, researcher\, dramaturg and live artist based in Utrecht. As a lecturer he is affiliated to ArtEZ Bachelor of Dance and HKU Theatre. Furthermore he works as a researcher for HKU focussing on research in education and the opportunities of performative research in the arts. He is affiliated to three professorships: Performative Processes\, Art and Professionalisation and Research in Creative Practices. Previously he was affiliated to Utrecht University\, Honours Programme of ArtEZ Insitute of the Arts. He was guest lecturer at University of Hildesheim\, ArtEZ Dance Academy and Ghent University. \nAs a dramaturg he works and worked with Stut Theater\, theatre collective Powerboat\, directors Suzan Tolsma\, Joachim Robbrecht and Michael Pinchbeck\, choreographers Jack Gallagher\, Minke Elisa Brands\, Jessica van Rüschen and circus Diedom. SUMMARY:International City-Gaming Conference 2017
DESCRIPTION:Tickets: https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/games-for-cities-conference-tickets-31317310920 \nFrom the website: \n\nThe Games for Cities programme is hosting the first international conference with leading ‘city-game’ design experts from around the world. Games for Cities is an initiative started by Play the City and partners\, and aims to create a platform for knowledge exchange on games that have the potential to facilitate more effective and inclusive city-making. The conference will be held in Rotterdam’s Het Nieuwe Instituut and is open to the public. \n\nCity-games are increasingly prevalent in the daily work of policy-makers\, regulators\, urban designers\, smart city experts and architects. The Games for Cities programme contributes to this maturing field of city-making in two ways: by generating a critical and holistic overview of implemented city games\, and by encouraging city-game designers to work closely with local governments. Organised by Play the City and partners in close collaboration with Het Nieuwe Institute\, this conference aims to bring Dutch city-gaming practices and international best practices into closer contact with one another. \nThis promises to be an intriguing conference with keynotes on how city-gaming is the future of city-making\, as well as numerous city-game break-out sessions to experience this future for yourselves. You will get the chance to meet Paolo Pedercini from Molleindustria\, Urban Think Tank’s Haris Piplas\, Boston-based social designer Eric Gordon from Emerson’s Engagement Lab\, The Why Factory’s Felix Madrazo\, and Ekim Tan from Play the City as the invited speakers at the conference. During the conference\, 10 internationally active city-game developers will be present to run game sessions. Among these city-games are the future scenario building of refugee saturated Jordanian cities\, playful renewable energy platforms for citizens\, urban water games\, and games that confront our own egos and identities regarding increasing urban densities.

SUMMARY:The Overkill 2016
DESCRIPTION:From the website http://www.theoverkill.nl/ \nThe Overkill Festival is a 48 hours nonstop gaming and film event. On The Overkill\, visitors are confronted with an ‘Overkill’ of popular culture multimedia\, with a strong focus on movies\, video and gaming. The transcending borders of these media and the corresponding subcultures evolving around them will get a special attention on the festival as well. \nThe festival is dedicated to underground movies and independent games. We will welcome artists\, media philosophers\, game designers and filmmakers from the Netherlands and abroad to get an overview of this subculture. The Overkill festival wants to be a place where all kind of gamers\, movie lovers and artists can meet\, play and think about the possibilities\, consequences and impact of these mediums. \nThe festival will be composed of different areas\, where the visitors will be able to play\, watch\, interact\, understand and chill out if need be! \n“You are in Ctrl” \nThe festival will explore the different ways of controlling the game\, physically\, intellectually\, in common strategies etc… We want to question the notion of control in the ‘nerd culture’ within our social context. And of course we will look further to the edge\, where we could start to lose control. \nVideo games are tools where you are required to take control (via controllers). A generation of new games intent to be more writerly and the player is given the chance to give meaning to his experience. The user takes over by playing the game\, using his knowledge\, experience\, physical skills etc…The new explosion of motion gaming system gives the user a broader range of experiences and interactions. These attractive sides of video games are used in contemporary art especially in order to integrate the public to the art work. \nVideo games are also spaces\, worlds\, where the player can be someone else\, allowing him to take control of this alter ego or accepting to lose control with somewhat measured consequences. New technologies are developed towards the direction that what was called magical seems today almost possible. Thanks to VR sets or kinects\, for examples\, our mind and our body are directly solicited to control the game. \nUsing video game tools and technologies allows artists and creators to give up some of their control over the final shape or their work\, allowing the user to interfere\, transform\, experiment within the context the artist created. They need each other to complete the work. This basic element in video games became a particularly interesting relationship between the artist and its public. Giving the control or controller to the viewer is a way to give his thoughts\, reactions and feeling a great space into the art scene.

SUMMARY:Fugue of Play
DESCRIPTION:FUGUE OF PLAY | 24 NOVEMBER – 8 DECEMBER | AN EXHIBITION ON ART AND VIDEOGAMES\nIn a world full of smartphones\, apps and augmented reality\, almost nobody notices a single new videogame. But as a result of the development of extended and accessible techniques\, the videogame is no longer just a game of skill. An extensive industry emerged with more and more influence on our daily lives. But how big is this influence? \nThe exposition Fugue of Play evokes a discussion on art ánd videogames. Techniques that are being developed for the gaming industry are used to create realistic 3D worlds\, that are accessible from the living room through virtual reality. And even if you leave this room\, the impact of videogames is all around you\, from social media on your smartphone\, the use of Oculus Rift (a VR- headset developed for video gaming) in tanks\, to flying drones and the treatment of lazy eye with a game. We are making our way to unknown territory\, in which different realities make up our lives. Fugue of Play plays with our consciousness of these realities and evokes questions around the meaning we give them. And how do these realities become a part of artistic practice? \nVisit the exhibition at Platform Minerva (Praediniussingel 59)\, Mon-Tu 11-20 and Fri 11-18. Participating artists are Bill Viola & The Game Innovation Lab\, Alle Jong\, Sander Bos\, Nuprahtor\, Pippin Barr\, Dan Pinchbeck\, Jason Rohrer\, Jeremy Couillard. \nhttp://bkv.academieminerva.nl/media/27189
