SUMMARY:Exile - Not a Jam! 2016
DESCRIPTION:4-day event to explore interactive things with each other (originally a game jam). \nGet away from the daily life and join other developers/designers/makers/people for the 11th Exile at the old folk highschool Vallekilde\, Denmark. \nAfter ten successful Exile Jams we have concluded that the world has enough game jams and that there are plenty of places to come up with and execute on quick ideas without sleep. \nThis is no longer a place for that.\nThis is now a place you go to explore or challenge an existing idea! \nhttp://exile.dk/

SUMMARY:Parallel Worlds 2016
DESCRIPTION:https://twitter.com/tigershungry/status/780723660298579969 \n\nHow do the virtual worlds of videogames reflect and augment our reality? \nWith VR headsets hitting the high street and augmented reality sending players hunting through their neighbourhoods 2016 has seen our virtual and physical worlds collide like never before. \nBut what does it mean to design a virtual world? Come join us on Friday 25 November 2016 as we hear from leading designers\, artists and thinkers whose work explores the ways in which videogames reflect and augment our reality. \nParallel Worlds is the V&A’s first conference dedicated to the design and culture of videogames and provides a brand new critical platform to discuss one of the most important design fields of our time. \nThis inaugural event will continue into the evening with a Parallel Worlds themed Friday Late where your reality will be further distorted with a host of arcades\, workshops and demonstrations across the Museum. \nFriday 25 November 2016\, 10:30am – 5:30pm\nBook Online – £35 (full price)\, £30 (concession)\, £15 (student) \n\nWebsite: http://www.vam.ac.uk/blog/network/parallel-worlds-a-new-videogame-design-conference \nPoster design by Sophia Foster-Dimino

SUMMARY:The Overkill 2016
DESCRIPTION:From the website http://www.theoverkill.nl/ \nThe Overkill Festival is a 48 hours nonstop gaming and film event. On The Overkill\, visitors are confronted with an ‘Overkill’ of popular culture multimedia\, with a strong focus on movies\, video and gaming. The transcending borders of these media and the corresponding subcultures evolving around them will get a special attention on the festival as well. \nThe festival is dedicated to underground movies and independent games. We will welcome artists\, media philosophers\, game designers and filmmakers from the Netherlands and abroad to get an overview of this subculture. The Overkill festival wants to be a place where all kind of gamers\, movie lovers and artists can meet\, play and think about the possibilities\, consequences and impact of these mediums. \nThe festival will be composed of different areas\, where the visitors will be able to play\, watch\, interact\, understand and chill out if need be! \n“You are in Ctrl” \nThe festival will explore the different ways of controlling the game\, physically\, intellectually\, in common strategies etc… We want to question the notion of control in the ‘nerd culture’ within our social context. And of course we will look further to the edge\, where we could start to lose control. \nVideo games are tools where you are required to take control (via controllers). A generation of new games intent to be more writerly and the player is given the chance to give meaning to his experience. The user takes over by playing the game\, using his knowledge\, experience\, physical skills etc…The new explosion of motion gaming system gives the user a broader range of experiences and interactions. These attractive sides of video games are used in contemporary art especially in order to integrate the public to the art work. \nVideo games are also spaces\, worlds\, where the player can be someone else\, allowing him to take control of this alter ego or accepting to lose control with somewhat measured consequences. New technologies are developed towards the direction that what was called magical seems today almost possible. Thanks to VR sets or kinects\, for examples\, our mind and our body are directly solicited to control the game. \nUsing video game tools and technologies allows artists and creators to give up some of their control over the final shape or their work\, allowing the user to interfere\, transform\, experiment within the context the artist created. They need each other to complete the work. This basic element in video games became a particularly interesting relationship between the artist and its public. Giving the control or controller to the viewer is a way to give his thoughts\, reactions and feeling a great space into the art scene.

SUMMARY:Fugue of Play
DESCRIPTION:FUGUE OF PLAY | 24 NOVEMBER – 8 DECEMBER | AN EXHIBITION ON ART AND VIDEOGAMES\nIn a world full of smartphones\, apps and augmented reality\, almost nobody notices a single new videogame. But as a result of the development of extended and accessible techniques\, the videogame is no longer just a game of skill. An extensive industry emerged with more and more influence on our daily lives. But how big is this influence? \nThe exposition Fugue of Play evokes a discussion on art ánd videogames. Techniques that are being developed for the gaming industry are used to create realistic 3D worlds\, that are accessible from the living room through virtual reality. And even if you leave this room\, the impact of videogames is all around you\, from social media on your smartphone\, the use of Oculus Rift (a VR- headset developed for video gaming) in tanks\, to flying drones and the treatment of lazy eye with a game. We are making our way to unknown territory\, in which different realities make up our lives. Fugue of Play plays with our consciousness of these realities and evokes questions around the meaning we give them. And how do these realities become a part of artistic practice? \nVisit the exhibition at Platform Minerva (Praediniussingel 59)\, Mon-Tu 11-20 and Fri 11-18. Participating artists are Bill Viola & The Game Innovation Lab\, Alle Jong\, Sander Bos\, Nuprahtor\, Pippin Barr\, Dan Pinchbeck\, Jason Rohrer\, Jeremy Couillard. \nhttp://bkv.academieminerva.nl/media/27189

SUMMARY:Wordplay London 2016
DESCRIPTION:This year\, our festival of writerly games will be happening in London\, England\, in a no less esteemed place than the British Library. According to the Wikipedia entry\, it’s the largest library in the world and included in their collection of 170\,000\,000 items is the manuscript copy of Alice’s Adventures Under Ground (which was later published as Alice in Wonderland)\, the Beowulf manuscript (the oldest surviving long poem in Old English)\, Captain Cook’s journal\, a couple of Gutenberg Bibles and two copies of the Magna Carta. \nWe decided on London because there is such a wealth of interactive fiction talent in the UK —Inkle (80 Days)\, Failbetter (Sunless Sea)\,Six To Start (Zombies\, Run!)\, Sam Barlow (Her Story) and Emily Short\, to name a few. We also felt that having it in another location will strengthen interconnections between gamemakers in different cities\, and provide new opportunities for game writers on either side of the pond to learn from and enjoy each other’s work. We intend for it to return to Toronto even better than ever\, and with a stronger international profile when it does. \nThe festival date this year will be Saturday November 19th to coincide with International Games in Libraries Day. We are proud to announce WordPlay’s new Festival Director\, Jo Summers\, who comes to us having been involved in programming and production in a range of UK based playful events\, such as Feral Vector and Now Play This. \nIf you would like to submit or suggest a writerly game — a game with exceptional writing or one that uses writing in an integral way — please do so via the form below before midnight on September 28th. You can submit your own game\, or a game you feel strongly about. No submission fee\, Toronto and international games welcome.

SUMMARY:Feral Vector 2016
DESCRIPTION:Feral Vector is a festival about making games and gamelike things. \nFeral Vector has workshops\, talks\, interviews\, live games\, Q&As\, performances\, walks\, and other things. It’s centred on the subject of game design\, its wider cultural influences\, the places people think it should go next\, and the neglected\, ignored places it’s already been. \nThis is not like other game design events. We avoid conference venues. There are usually multiple things going on at once\, in different rooms. Any presenters we have are invited to do whatever they want\, and that doesn’t have to be a talk if that’s not their kind of thing. It’s primarily about design\, and accessible to non-developers. \nWebsite: http://feral-vector.com/
