SUMMARY:Innovation\, Play & the Future of Technology
DESCRIPTION:Talk by Steven Johnson\, author of “Wonderland : How Play Made the Modern World.” \n\nSteven Johnson\, the international best-selling author of How We Got To Now\, whose TED talk has had over 1 million views\, in a talk on innovation and the future of technology seen through the history of play: the subject of his major new book\, praised by Bill Clinton\, Steven Pinker and Malcolm Gladwell- Wonderland : How Play Made the Modern World. \nIf want to know where technology is headed you should be playing close attention to the way we play. You’ll find the future wherever people are having the most fun. Contending that the pursuit of novelty and wonder is a powerful driver of world-shaping technological change\, Steven Johnson argues that\, throughout history\, the cutting edge of innovation lies wherever people are working the hardest to keep themselves and others amused. \nHe will introduce us to the colourful innovators of leisure: the explorers\, proprietors\, showmen\, and artists who changed the trajectory of history with their luxurious wares\, exotic meals\, taverns\, gambling tables\, and magic shows. And will make the compelling case that anyone who wants to know where technology is headed next should be playing close attention to the way we play.

SUMMARY:Kraks@dekrook: games in De Krook!? Over het belang van spelen
DESCRIPTION:Evening in library De Krook in Ghent: the possibilities of videogames as form of culture. SUMMARY:International City-Gaming Conference 2017
DESCRIPTION:Tickets: https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/games-for-cities-conference-tickets-31317310920 \nFrom the website: \n\nThe Games for Cities programme is hosting the first international conference with leading ‘city-game’ design experts from around the world. Games for Cities is an initiative started by Play the City and partners\, and aims to create a platform for knowledge exchange on games that have the potential to facilitate more effective and inclusive city-making. The conference will be held in Rotterdam’s Het Nieuwe Instituut and is open to the public. \n\nCity-games are increasingly prevalent in the daily work of policy-makers\, regulators\, urban designers\, smart city experts and architects. The Games for Cities programme contributes to this maturing field of city-making in two ways: by generating a critical and holistic overview of implemented city games\, and by encouraging city-game designers to work closely with local governments. Organised by Play the City and partners in close collaboration with Het Nieuwe Institute\, this conference aims to bring Dutch city-gaming practices and international best practices into closer contact with one another. \nThis promises to be an intriguing conference with keynotes on how city-gaming is the future of city-making\, as well as numerous city-game break-out sessions to experience this future for yourselves. You will get the chance to meet Paolo Pedercini from Molleindustria\, Urban Think Tank’s Haris Piplas\, Boston-based social designer Eric Gordon from Emerson’s Engagement Lab\, The Why Factory’s Felix Madrazo\, and Ekim Tan from Play the City as the invited speakers at the conference. During the conference\, 10 internationally active city-game developers will be present to run game sessions. Among these city-games are the future scenario building of refugee saturated Jordanian cities\, playful renewable energy platforms for citizens\, urban water games\, and games that confront our own egos and identities regarding increasing urban densities.

SUMMARY:Nordic Game Discovery Day 2017
DESCRIPTION:“What we will do on the Discovery Day is to attack the topic of passion from these different angles and give you a variety of takes on what it means when creating games. From the drive that keeps you going to empathy for players with less and less time at their hands\, from the pleasure that games can create in players to the persistence you need to survive as an artist\, the talks will shed a light on the passion that keeps us all going. Come join us for the first ever Nordic Game Discovery Day.” \nWe wanted to have a curatorial theme that links all presentations. It had to be a topic that allows for an artistic angle and also connects the practice of making games with the life of the creator. Starting from the word passion\, that describes why we all make games\, we went in four different directions: \n\n\nDrive – the passion that keeps you going despite the world falling apart \n\n\nFeeling – pleasure and fulfillment in games and outside \n\n\nEmpathy – having a heart in this grim world \n\n\nPersistence – making games while you have a life \n\n\n  \nDiscovery Day & Showcase: Friday\, 19 May\nCreated and curated in close cooperation with longtime partners Copenhagen Game Collective\, Nordic Game Discovery Day will be held as the last day of NG17\, namely Friday\, 19 May. Open to all NG17 conference pass holders\, stand-alone Discovery Day & Showcase tickets are available for only 59 EUR. Get yours right here! \n10:00 – 16:00: Loads of great talks\, all conference auditoriums\nThe Discovery Day program includes a strong speaker line-up with some of the most exciting names in game creation today. Session details and speakers to be announced soon. \n10:00 – 20:00: Discovery Showcase\, Dining Hall\nAt the Discovery Showcase\, developers can book a table in the Dining Hall and join the selection of great new game projects; visit the showcase to play the creations and meet the developers! Highlighting the Discovery Showcase will be the eight games nominated for the annual Sensation Award. All NG17 attendees will also be able to play the nominated games during the conference and vote for their favorite. \n12:00 – 14:00: Lunch\, Dining Hall\nA complimentary lunch is included with all NG17 conference passes. \n13:00-14:00: Discovery Contest Grand Final\nAt the grand final of Nordic Game’s debut live pitch contest\, participants will present their games to the grand final judges\, among them legendary Japanese game designer Fumito Ueda\, and before an NG17 audience. Read more about the contest here. \n15:00-16:00: NG17 Wrap-up\, including Sensation Awards\nThomas Vigild is back with his not-to-be-missed conference wrap-up show\, this year fused with a wealth of award presentations\, including announcement of the Sensation Award winner as well as Discovery Contest “Game of the Year”. \n16:00-20:00: NG17 After Hours\nNordic Game Discovery Day will end with a “chill” bang in the Dining Hall. SUMMARY:Playful Arts Sessions #1
DESCRIPTION:Interactive Performance evening. \nPlayful Arts Sessions is an exciting evening where you can get acquainted with leading and emerging artists at the intersection of visual arts\, performing arts and playful design. Includes Dinner!\nDuring the first Playful Arts Sessions we dive into the work of artist duos The100Hands (NL)  and Louise Orwin & Eugenie Pastor (UK)\, who both playfully experiment with the relation between the artist and their audience. How far will we go in setting up and act in interactive experiences?\n\nDuring the first half of the evening we meet in a playful way during two performances and a tasteful dinner. During the second half of the evening we will speak with the artists under the guidance of expert moderator Jochem Naafs.\n\nTimetable: \n17.00  Doors open\n17.15   Start program\n17.30  The Loneliness of Crowds – Louise Orwin & Eugénie Pastor\n19.45  Dinner @ Hangop\n20.00 25Feet – the 100Hands\n21.15   Aftertalk with the artists and moderator Jochem Naafs \nTickets*: \n25 Euros: Two performances + dinner\n20 Euros: Two Performances + dinner ( = Early Bird until 18 May) \n*Tickets are for the whole evening including dinner. \n\nInteractive Performances:\nThe Loneliness of Crowds\nby Eugénie Pastor and Louise Orwin\n \nThe Loneliness of Crowds is an immersive experience for 1-2 blindfolded participants. During 10 minutes\, you will be involved in being in a festival environment. Complete with karaoke\, crowdsurfing\, shelter for rain and dancing. Afterwards you will give the same care to other participants. \n25Feet\nby The100Hands\nAt a distance of 25 feet (7.3m) and further people interact among each other mainly as viewers and performers. By placing the audience together with two performers in a square of 25ft2\, everyone – willingly or not – enters each others ‘social space’. From there begins the journey closer and closer\, into ‘personal’ and ‘intimate space’: areas where the most violent and intimate physical interactions happen. \n25 Feet is a sober\, effectively designed\, interactive dance performance about physical proximity and the dynamics between violence and intimacy\, that both happen on closest distance. \nThe Artists:\n\nThe100Hands:\nThe100Hands create interactive dance performances\, mostly site specific\, now and then staged in theaters.\nSince 2014 Jasper Džuki Jelen (NL/SI) and Mojra Vogelnik Škerlj (SI) combine their backgrounds in contemporary dance and architecture to create works that strongly relate to space. The movement vocabulary of this duo sources from partnering and martial arts and fuels an interest in the social\, interactive potential of physical performance formats.\nThe work of The100Hands is presented in many international festivals and is produced in Belgium\, Sweden\, Denmark and Egypt. Its human and physical approach speaks to a wide audience of all ages.\nhttps://the100hands.com/\n\nLouise Orwin (UK) is a live art artist\, researcher\, writer and performer. She has performed her work at various stages and festivals in the UK and beyond. Her work is characterized by brutality\, personal vulnerability and the involvement of the public in intimate experiences. In her work she focuses on the accidental encounter with a stranger. She plays with stereotypical views of the female in popular culture versus her own awkwardness. In her work practice\, she mixes the theatrical with everyday and interrogates the interaction between the creator and her audience.\nHttp://louiseorwin.com/ \nEugénie Pastor (UK) is an artist\, performer\, musician and theatre-maker\, based in London and originally from France. She’s an Associate Artist at Little Bulb Theatre since 2009 and co-devised and performed in many of the company’s award-winning shows\, including: Orpheus\, Squally Showers\, Operation Greenfield\, Sporadical\, and most of Little Bulb’s cabaret and band incarnations. \nShe’s also a freelance performer and theatre-maker\, and has collaborated with Tom Penn\, Edith Tankus\, Glen Neath and David Rosenberg\, and new circus companies Barely Methodical and Camille Boitel / L’Immédiat. Her work has been shown at Battersea Arts Centre\, Soho Theatre\, The Shed / National Theatre\, Salzburg Festival\, West Yorkshire Playhouse\, Millenium Centre Cardiff\, Bristol Old Vic\, Latitude and Wilderness Festivals\, among others.\nhttp://www.eugeniepastor.co.uk/ \nThe Moderator:\nJochem Naafs holds an MA in both New Media Studies and Theatre Studies. He is a lecturer\, researcher\, dramaturg and live artist based in Utrecht. As a lecturer he is affiliated to ArtEZ Bachelor of Dance and HKU Theatre. Furthermore he works as a researcher for HKU focussing on research in education and the opportunities of performative research in the arts. He is affiliated to three professorships: Performative Processes\, Art and Professionalisation and Research in Creative Practices. Previously he was affiliated to Utrecht University\, Honours Programme of ArtEZ Insitute of the Arts. He was guest lecturer at University of Hildesheim\, ArtEZ Dance Academy and Ghent University. \nAs a dramaturg he works and worked with Stut Theater\, theatre collective Powerboat\, directors Suzan Tolsma\, Joachim Robbrecht and Michael Pinchbeck\, choreographers Jack Gallagher\, Minke Elisa Brands\, Jessica van Rüschen and circus Diedom.
