SUMMARY:New Horizons - De Kunst Achter Games
DESCRIPTION:New Horizons – De Kunst Achter Games (the art behind games) \nExhibition on the mutual influence of game art\, contemporary art & pop culture. Part of Next Gen Art Event 2014. \nFrom the website: \n\nBy displaying games and other art forms next to each other\, the New Horizons exhibition in the Fries Museum is one of the first that really shows how artists from various disciplines inspire each other and how they\, sometimes unconsciously\, borrow from art history. The impossible mazes from M.C Escher return in games like Echochrome and Monument Valley. An artist like Cory Arcangel transforms classic videogames to abandoned landscapes. In the exhibition we show work of a number of leading studio’s\, like Naughty Dog\, BioWare\, thatgamecompany and DICE. To get in mood\, here is a selection of artworks in the exhibition. The New Horizons exhibition is on show from November 21 until March 22 in the Fries Museum in Leeuwarden\, the Netherlands. \n\nRead a Next Gen Art Event & exhibition report on gamesindustry.biz: http://www.gamesindustry.biz/articles/2015-01-12-next-gen-art-event-taking-video-game-art-seriously

SUMMARY:PRACTICE 2014
DESCRIPTION:PRACTICE: Game Design in Detail. \nFrom the website: \nPRACTICE is an annual event that takes a close look at the concrete challenges of game design\, bridging dialog across industries. Where else can a console developer discuss level design with a tabletop RPG writer? Or an iPhone puzzle creator debate economy balancing with collectable card game designer? Or a professional sports official share secrets with an experimental indie game artist? No other conference brings together such a diverse group of game designers for high-level dialog. \nWe explore the day-t0-day\, nuts and bolts practice of game design – where the rubber of design ideas and methods meets the road of meaningful\, playable games. Join us for three days of lectures and panels\, workshops and discussions\, mixed with plenty of game-playing and socializing. \nSpeakers: \n\nJonathan Blow\nVlaada Chvatil\nHolly Gramazio\nJake Elliot & Tamas Kemenczy\nSamantha Kalman\nDeirdra Kiai\nDrew Murray\nJohn Popaduik\nAsher Volmer

SUMMARY:QGCon: The Queerness and Games Conference 2014
DESCRIPTION:QGCon is a free\, weekend-long\, interdisciplinary event. The goal of QGCon is to create an open and inclusive environment for discussing the intersection of video games and LGBTQ issues\, however you define them. QGCon brings together academics and game developers to foster dialogues that break traditional disciplinary boundaries. The QGCon organizers believe in the importance of creativity and play as tools for intellectual and personal exploration. \nThe theme for this year’s QGcon is Difference at Play. Some questions inspired by the theme might include: What does it mean to play differently? What does it mean to play at difference itself? In what way can “difference” speaks to questions of race\, gender\, and sexuality for games and those who play them? \n\n\nTickets: http://www.eventbrite.com/e/qgcon-2014-tickets-12537739717?aff=efbnen

SUMMARY:IndieCade 2014
DESCRIPTION:Indie Games Festival. \nFrom the website: \n\nThe IndieCade Festival is the biggest independent game celebration in the United States. This premiere event is held each October in the Los Angeles Area and is open to the industry and to the public. \nEvents October 9th – 12th\, 2014 include a professional conference track\, business networking\, social events\, tournaments and entertainment\, as well as family-focused activities\, meet-and-greets with game creators\, hands-on gameplay with more than 150 top independent games. \nIndieCade offers a unique opportunity to play and preview the latest innovative indie games of all types and rub shoulders with the creators of the newest games\, as well as legends from across the industry. \nConference \nConference Sessions \n“IndieCade 2014: Communities\, Cliques and Cultures. \nAs we looked back across the months since IndieCade 2013\, and as we looked forward to IndieCade 2014\, we couldn’t help but reflect on the state of our community. We quickly realized we were talking about communities—overlapping cliques\, cultures\, groups and mindsets—that overlap here at IndieCade. \nAn important part of maintaining a community is understanding where the community has come from so that we can understand where its going. These reflections enable us to honor those that got us here\, avoid mistakes of the past or other industries\, as well as to build a vision of the future to which we should all work to move toward. \nIn putting together this year’s conference\, there are a few conversations we hope to help focus and maybe even progress. Things like celebrating our diversity of makers and games. Finding ways for more of us to make games a sustainable enterprise. Sharing our practices and games with one another and the larger public. Understanding the impact indie games have had so we can begin to see where we can go. \nCome\, play\, chat and make games with us. Let’s get inspired and chart the course of indie games! \nNaomi Clark\, John Sharp & Akira Thompson\nCo-Chairs\, IndieCade Conference 2014”

SUMMARY:Playpublik Kraków 2014
DESCRIPTION:Festival for Playful Public Spaces in Kraków\, Poland. Curated by Invisible Playground. \nTheme: Momentary States \nFrom the website: \n\nTake a moment and consider your world as a playground. Think of the busy intersection you cross every day and the building you live in. The majestic church or the shady bar you might visit on the weekend. Follow a path from the corner of the web you think only you know about to your town’s public square and back. Go to work\, if you can. Talk to a loved one on the phone. Walk from the Yoga studio to your favorite very old museum\, then stop by the logistics center that sends you your packages and\, finally\, jump! All the way to mars (or parliament\, or prison). \nThere’s something happening on every part of the playground\, isn’t there?\nBut are you in on the game? \nThis fall\, a new version of Playpublik will take place in Kraków\, Poland. Initiated by Goethe-Institut Krakau as part of the project SPIELTRIEB! and curated by Invisible Playground\, the festival celebrates\, explores\, questions – in public\, through play – what it means to live together in our shared world. Yes\, really: as adults who play. \nWe don’t know about you\, but we are not so sure about public space anymore. What it’s for\, what we want from it\, where to find it. Same goes for privacy. Who knows the rules and systems that govern how we communicate\, commute\, work\, play\, love? \nBut we do know this: Together we can make new rules and enter different states\, at least for a moment. We can feel them\, test them\, know about them\, discuss them. Let’s look at ourselves\, each other and the surrounding world from inside them\, then decide if we want to throw away or keep them. Anyone can do it\, and it’s fun! \nA great way to do this is by playing\, making\, and talking about games. This is why Playpublik consists of three formats: Games\, Workshops\, and Conversations. \n\nOpen Call for projects. Submission Deadline extended to 17 August 2014.
