SUMMARY:Art & Arcade 2014
DESCRIPTION:Artistic Arcade machines from around the world exhibition. \n\n \nFrom the website: \nArcade video machines are cult. They first appeared in the United States and Europe in the 1970s\, as a new variation on the traditional ‘penny arcades’.  Classics such as Pong\, Space Invaders\, Pac-Man\, Mario Bros\, Donkey Kong and Tron marked the heyday of electronic video games. Many successful games were later released for use on PCs and video game consoles and thus accelerated the spread of home computers. Many artists use arcade video machines as an artistic medium. Not only do they program arty computer games\, they also turn the machines themselves into art objects and installations. The artists convert their machines\, pimping them up with new functions\, creating new game worlds\, playing around with the 8-byte aesthetic and transforming games culture into art. \nThe exhibition at the House of Electronic Arts Basel simulates a ‘video game arcade’ with seven artistic arcade-machines from all over the world (“Painstation”\, “PentaPong”\, “The Machine”\, “Radical ATM”\, “Tesla Arcade”\, “Cage was a n00b” & “Racer”)\, combined with other works of JODI\, Evan Roth\, and Hussein Chalayan. Visitors can\, of course\, not only admire the best of artists’ video arcade creations but also play them. \nCurated by Alain Bieber \nParticipants: \nDjeff\nMOBILESKINO\nHaas\, Wellershoff\, Winter\n//////////fur//// art entertainment interfaces \nAndreas Ullrich / C. Rockefeller Art Investment Group\nIvan Kozenitzky\, Frederico Lazcano\nCanedo\, Maingardt\, Hartmann\nJodi\nEvan Roth\nHussein Chalayan

SUMMARY:PRACTICE 2013
DESCRIPTION:3rd Annual PRACTICE Conference – ‘An intimate gathering of top designers’: \n\nFrom the website: \nPRACTICE is designed for a high-level exchange of ideas among professional game designers. Game design is a complex multi-threaded discipline\, and PRACTICE is a unique opportunity to understand and refine what we do when we design games. \nPRACTICE: Game Design in Detail. Where game designers of every stripe butt heads\, share ideas\, and break bread together. \nPRACTICE is an annual event that takes a close look at the concrete challenges of game design\, bridging dialog across industries. Where else can a console developer discuss level design with a tabletop RPG writer? Or an iPhone puzzle creator debate economy balancing with collectable card game designer? Or a professional sports official share secrets with an experimental indie game artist? No other conference brings together such a diverse group of game designers for high-level dialog. \n \nWe explore the day-t0-day\, nuts and bolts practice of game design – where the rubber of design ideas and methods meets the road of meaningful\, playable games. Join us for three days of lectures and panels\, workshops and discussions\, mixed with plenty of game-playing and socializing. \nLectures\nEach year PRACTICE features presentations from a variety of expert and accomplished game designers. Speakers focus on design challenges and solutions in a wide range of games\, from AAA videogames to collectable card games\, to indie experiments to military simulations. \nPanels\nIn addition to individual speakers\, PRACTICE features panels organized around topics of interest to working game designers. These panels allow speakers to exchange ideas more freely with each other and the attendees. \nOpen Problem Session\nOpen Problems is a high-energy “open mic” session in which any conference attendee can present a work or idea in progress for discussion and feedback. \nSocializing\nThe best conversations often take place outside of the scheduled sessions\, and PRACTICE features receptions\, parties\, and plenty of time for unstructured interaction. \nSpeakers:\nMichael Brough\nKeith Burgun\nCecilia Dolk &\nMartin Ericsson\nRob Daviau\nSoren Johnson\nMorgan Kennedy\nSusanna Liu\nBrad Muir\nDavin Pavlas\nJake Rodkin\nEmily Short\nQuintin Smith\nWarren Spector\nSean Vanaman\nRobert Yang

SUMMARY:Freeplay Independent Games Festival 2013
DESCRIPTION:Freeplay is Australia’s longest running independent games festival exploring the intersection of indie development\, culture\, arts and education. \n\n \nFrom the website: \nThe Freeplay Independent Games Festival is excited to announce that its conference program\, this year titled “Volume of Revolution\,” will take place at the State Library of Victoria on the weekend of September 28 and 29. \nVolume of Revolution seeks to expose\, radically upend\, celebrate\, critically examine and change our approach to making games. It’s looking back at our history so we can forge a better future. It’s a mathematical concept representing the cycle\, the fullness\, the width and breadth of our medium. It’s about loudness\, and listening to the quiet voices we cannot ignore. \nAs the first festival run by new directors Katie Williams and Harry Lee\, this unique conference theme ushers in a new generation of thought in the areas of both the Australian and international games development scenes. As well as workshops and conference sessions\, selected local games and Freeplay Awards finalists playable in Experimedia for the duration of the weekend. Along with the new directors’ vision comes changes to the program\, which will this year see variations in the session format to present new ways of provoking conversation. \nFreeplay is thrilled to once again be working with the State Library of Victoria\, with 2013 marking the fifth year of the festival’s close relationship with the Library. “We feel that there is no place better suited in Victoria than the State Library to conduct and encourage vital\, high-quality discussion of innovation in the development of both digital and non-digital games\,” say Lee and Williams of Freeplay’s long-standing partnership with the nationally recognised arts institution. \nNowPlay Mentorship\nFreeplay is also announcing the opening of applications for the brand new NowPlay Mentorship\, a mentorship program co-curated with Melbourne-based contemporary games and playful collective Pop Up Playground. The mentorship will encourage and support the development of emerging designers working in the field of play\, with the winning designer or team to be announced at the 2013 Freeplay conference. \nCall for speakers: http://www.freeplay.net.au/speakers.html

SUMMARY:Play:Vienna 2013
DESCRIPTION:Play:Vienna is an annual play festival in Austria\, turning the city of Vienna into a playground. \n\nFrom the website: \nThe Play:Vienna festival 2012 was Austria’s first festival for games in public space. It took place at the Museumsquartier Wien and throughout the whole city on a weekend in September 2012. Over the whole weekend we had 23 local and international artists and game designers running 20 games with over 800 players participating in them. We want to provide an environment for new types of public games\, bringing people from different backgrounds together through experiencing new and different kinds of interaction with their environment. \nCall for games\nLike last year\, we are looking for your games to feature at our festival!\nWhat games? Street games\, urban games\, pervasive games! Anything that is playfully interacting with or in the city. \nSend us your concepts and game designs\, it doesn’t matter whether the duration is five minutes or the whole weekend\, whether you can play it on your own\, or need hundreds of participants\, whether they’re high-tech or low-fi\, or whether they’re top secret and pervasive\, or big spectacles for everyone to see. The only pre-requisite is that it needs to happen in public space in the city of Vienna. \nLast year we had people balance toy turtles on the back of their hands in Turtle Wushu\, chase Mr X through the underground network of Vienna in Wien jagt Mr X\, find a treasure and defend themselves against the evil Weeping Angels\, and smuggle an expensive (or was it a fake?) pearl necklace across the Stephansplatz in The Smugglers Game. \nWe’re eagerly awaiting your designs! Send them to: conspiracy@streetgames.at. You can also email us\, if you have any questions of course. \nDeadline: July 5. \nShould you need feedback or want to test your ideas\, we will hold Game Clinics and workshops in the coming weeks up to the festival where you can improve your designs and test them!

SUMMARY:PLATINE Festival 2013
DESCRIPTION:PLATINE festival focuses on electronic media\, covering the realm from art statements up to alternative gaming forms. Cologne\, Germany. \n\n \nFrom the website: \nPLATINE festival focuses on electronic media\, covering the realm from art statements up to alternative gaming forms. Developers and artists from all over Germany\, as well as guests from six other countries\, use PLATINE as a daring and unique platform to present their ideas and visions to the public. \nPLATINE takes place in Cologne-Ehrenfeld\, in traditional local pubs\, theatrical workshops\, and small galleries. PLATINE strives to be a source of inspiration – and invites you to excitement\, discoveries\, and interaction within an urban environment. Wishing you a delightful time reading the following pages. Hopefully we can make you feel the magic of PLATINE. See you in August! \nElectronic gear is a constantly present and integral part of our everyday life. It bears significant impact on society and the individual. Very often we only notice the final product. Behind its appeal as a dazzling mass phenomenon\, the actual processes of field work\, experiments\, and development become invisible. \nExhibitors \nIn the broadest sense they are developers. They de-velop the solid structures of a world\, generated by pixels\, numbers and algorithms and passionately play with technology. Some of them modify the manufacturer’s thought purposes of applications\, alter game consoles or software. Or they intersect virtual realities and real life. Some of them show art to participate\, trial and touch. So they all create sensory input\, innovative worlds of perception and futuristic prototypes within a technologic driven evolution. \nExhibition / Projects\n\nMathieu Rivier – Light Form\nweAREmedienkuenstler – Auto\nJonathan Giroux – Black & White\nTobias Hartmann\, Remmy Canedo\, Sergej Maingardt – cage was a n00b 3.0\nJoelle Aeschlimann – Little Boxes\nJohannes Siebler – Der Ast\nMatthias Lohscheidt / ECAL – Pyramid Cascades\nEspadaysantacruz Studio – The Invaders\nMartin Reiche – Duality\nThilko Limbeck\, Hannes Hummel und Philipp Carbotta – Pariah – Signal loss\nKonsolenkinder – Games People Play…\nFafankula – Portraits\nSven Bormes und Dirk Bours – Scrhapsody II\nFritz Gnad und Gregor Kuschmirz – void machine\nTill Maria Jürgens und Vitus Schuhwerk – @><#!!!\nMarco Jan Büttner – Walk the line\nBritzpetermann – Schau!\nJonathan Fuss – Asten/Egmond\nTIND – MONOCHROME\nBildundtonfabrik und undev – lasact\n\nAmiga ASCII Art\n\nTrivial\nDipswitch\nSkin\naBHO\nzaner\ndMG\n\nKonsolenkinder\n\nLow Bit Revolte\ndizkOtrOOpa\nNørDS\nVJ: Autoexec.bat

SUMMARY:Notgames Fest 2013
DESCRIPTION:After the great success in 2011 and right in time for the big games events in the city\, the Notgames Fest returns to Cologne with a five days exhibition curated by Tale of Tales and the Cologne Game Lab. \n\nFrom the website: \nIf games form the top of an iceberg\, notgames provide the remainder. Videogames are an incredibly versatile creative medium. Beyond the confines of competitive play\, a wealth of experiences awaits us. From deep psychological probing to whimsical lighthearted joy\, this year´s Notgames Fest intends to illustrate the breadth of human existence captured in interactive art. No more hiding behind the young age of the medium or despairing about humanity’s addiction to empty fun. SUMMARY:Burning Bridges 2013
DESCRIPTION:Burning Bridges – A game developer unconference \n\n \nFrom the website: \nBurning Bridges is a game developer unconference\, a meet up for game developers ranging from production level people at bigger companies\, post-indies and to people that are new to the indie scene. \nIt’s a get together where people can casually meet  under very friendly conditions and talk about their daily work\, and share tips and tricks. \nWe will also arrange a post release party for all people that have released a game but not properly celebrated their achievement due to lack of funds or time to arrange a party (or everyone else’s lack of time to travel to every release party). This will also be a great way for people to show off what they have been making the last year. \nWhy? \nAs they say\, people do business with people\, not companies. That’s why we want yet another event where people can meet\, say hi\, and possibly find new people to collaborate with\, strengthen their already existing contacts and to get new members into the community. \nWho? \nThe people behind Burning Bridges are Swedish Redgrim\, Danish Unicorn7.org and Copenhagen Game Collective. \n\nWebsite\nSign Up\nTwitter: #BRNBRGS
