SUMMARY:igfest 6
DESCRIPTION:  \nigfest: “a festival of interesting games you play in the street.” \n\n From the website & organizer: \n“Igfest is a festival like no other. Where other festivals feature mud\, crippling ticket prices and questionable hygiene\, we are more in the market for robots\, ninja death cows\, sweetshop bank heists\, biblical sized water fights and powdered paint. Lots of powdered paint!“ \n“igfest is Bristol’s very own interesting games festival – street games\, outdoor spectacles\, mass social interaction\, the reclamation of public urban spaces for play and adventure. Founded in 2008\, the festival is in its fifth year.” \nLineup in the works. \n“Two new headliners\, the Cargo Remix and Incitement\, will make their WORLD DEBUT and then there’s the igfest fringe to explore\, dozens of beautiful games wrapped up in a party in Castle Park 8th September. Games\, great food and fine ales – what more could you want on a sunny afternoon? Bring a rug\, a picnic and your plimsols/pocket money. Headline tickets are £15 & £28\, the Festival Fringe games free to £5.” \n\nWebsite

SUMMARY:Play:Vienna 2013
DESCRIPTION:Play:Vienna is an annual play festival in Austria\, turning the city of Vienna into a playground. \n\nFrom the website: \nThe Play:Vienna festival 2012 was Austria’s first festival for games in public space. It took place at the Museumsquartier Wien and throughout the whole city on a weekend in September 2012. Over the whole weekend we had 23 local and international artists and game designers running 20 games with over 800 players participating in them. We want to provide an environment for new types of public games\, bringing people from different backgrounds together through experiencing new and different kinds of interaction with their environment. \nCall for games\nLike last year\, we are looking for your games to feature at our festival!\nWhat games? Street games\, urban games\, pervasive games! Anything that is playfully interacting with or in the city. \nSend us your concepts and game designs\, it doesn’t matter whether the duration is five minutes or the whole weekend\, whether you can play it on your own\, or need hundreds of participants\, whether they’re high-tech or low-fi\, or whether they’re top secret and pervasive\, or big spectacles for everyone to see. The only pre-requisite is that it needs to happen in public space in the city of Vienna. \nLast year we had people balance toy turtles on the back of their hands in Turtle Wushu\, chase Mr X through the underground network of Vienna in Wien jagt Mr X\, find a treasure and defend themselves against the evil Weeping Angels\, and smuggle an expensive (or was it a fake?) pearl necklace across the Stephansplatz in The Smugglers Game. \nWe’re eagerly awaiting your designs! Send them to: conspiracy@streetgames.at. You can also email us\, if you have any questions of course. \nDeadline: July 5. \nShould you need feedback or want to test your ideas\, we will hold Game Clinics and workshops in the coming weeks up to the festival where you can improve your designs and test them!

SUMMARY:PLATINE Festival 2013
DESCRIPTION:PLATINE festival focuses on electronic media\, covering the realm from art statements up to alternative gaming forms. Cologne\, Germany. \n\n \nFrom the website: \nPLATINE festival focuses on electronic media\, covering the realm from art statements up to alternative gaming forms. Developers and artists from all over Germany\, as well as guests from six other countries\, use PLATINE as a daring and unique platform to present their ideas and visions to the public. \nPLATINE takes place in Cologne-Ehrenfeld\, in traditional local pubs\, theatrical workshops\, and small galleries. PLATINE strives to be a source of inspiration – and invites you to excitement\, discoveries\, and interaction within an urban environment. Wishing you a delightful time reading the following pages. Hopefully we can make you feel the magic of PLATINE. See you in August! \nElectronic gear is a constantly present and integral part of our everyday life. It bears significant impact on society and the individual. Very often we only notice the final product. Behind its appeal as a dazzling mass phenomenon\, the actual processes of field work\, experiments\, and development become invisible. \nExhibitors \nIn the broadest sense they are developers. They de-velop the solid structures of a world\, generated by pixels\, numbers and algorithms and passionately play with technology. Some of them modify the manufacturer’s thought purposes of applications\, alter game consoles or software. Or they intersect virtual realities and real life. Some of them show art to participate\, trial and touch. So they all create sensory input\, innovative worlds of perception and futuristic prototypes within a technologic driven evolution. \nExhibition / Projects\n\nMathieu Rivier – Light Form\nweAREmedienkuenstler – Auto\nJonathan Giroux – Black & White\nTobias Hartmann\, Remmy Canedo\, Sergej Maingardt – cage was a n00b 3.0\nJoelle Aeschlimann – Little Boxes\nJohannes Siebler – Der Ast\nMatthias Lohscheidt / ECAL – Pyramid Cascades\nEspadaysantacruz Studio – The Invaders\nMartin Reiche – Duality\nThilko Limbeck\, Hannes Hummel und Philipp Carbotta – Pariah – Signal loss\nKonsolenkinder – Games People Play…\nFafankula – Portraits\nSven Bormes und Dirk Bours – Scrhapsody II\nFritz Gnad und Gregor Kuschmirz – void machine\nTill Maria Jürgens und Vitus Schuhwerk – @><#!!!\nMarco Jan Büttner – Walk the line\nBritzpetermann – Schau!\nJonathan Fuss – Asten/Egmond\nTIND – MONOCHROME\nBildundtonfabrik und undev – lasact\n\nAmiga ASCII Art\n\nTrivial\nDipswitch\nSkin\naBHO\nzaner\ndMG\n\nKonsolenkinder\n\nLow Bit Revolte\ndizkOtrOOpa\nNørDS\nVJ: Autoexec.bat

SUMMARY:Notgames Fest 2013
DESCRIPTION:After the great success in 2011 and right in time for the big games events in the city\, the Notgames Fest returns to Cologne with a five days exhibition curated by Tale of Tales and the Cologne Game Lab. \n\nFrom the website: \nIf games form the top of an iceberg\, notgames provide the remainder. Videogames are an incredibly versatile creative medium. Beyond the confines of competitive play\, a wealth of experiences awaits us. From deep psychological probing to whimsical lighthearted joy\, this year´s Notgames Fest intends to illustrate the breadth of human existence captured in interactive art. No more hiding behind the young age of the medium or despairing about humanity’s addiction to empty fun. It is time to wield this formidable tool for the pursuit of beauty in its myriad forms.\nMichael Samyn\, Tale of Tales  \n\nNOTGAMES FEST 2013\nAugust 19-23 at the Cologne Game Lab \nAfter the great success in 2011 and right in time for the big games events in the city\, the Notgames Fest returns to Cologne with a five days exhibition curated by Tale of Tales and the Cologne Game Lab. \nIn addition to the main exhibition and social events\, this year´s Notgames Fest will feature an expo-playground for advanced prototypes where game designers can show their work-in-progress to a broader public.

SUMMARY:Burning Bridges 2013
DESCRIPTION:Burning Bridges – A game developer unconference \n\n \nFrom the website: \nBurning Bridges is a game developer unconference\, a meet up for game developers ranging from production level people at bigger companies\, post-indies and to people that are new to the indie scene. \nIt’s a get together where people can casually meet  under very friendly conditions and talk about their daily work\, and share tips and tricks. \nWe will also arrange a post release party for all people that have released a game but not properly celebrated their achievement due to lack of funds or time to arrange a party (or everyone else’s lack of time to travel to every release party). This will also be a great way for people to show off what they have been making the last year. \nWhy? \nAs they say\, people do business with people\, not companies. That’s why we want yet another event where people can meet\, say hi\, and possibly find new people to collaborate with\, strengthen their already existing contacts and to get new members into the community. \nWho? \nThe people behind Burning Bridges are Swedish Redgrim\, Danish Unicorn7.org and Copenhagen Game Collective. \n\nWebsite\nSign Up\nTwitter: #BRNBRGS

SUMMARY:Talk & Play #1 - Berlin
DESCRIPTION:Talk & Play is a bi-monthly meetup whose goal is to give a better idea of what it’s like to create and play games today\, providing the opportunity to local independent game makers to showcase their work in a friendly and relaxed environment \n\nFrom the Open TechSchool Event website: \nIt’s never been easier to make video games\, thanks to the multitude of resources available and a growing worldwide community willing to help beginners. As a result\, new games are being released every day\, exploring different directions and tackling novel themes: playing is more stimulating and inclusive than ever. \nTalk & Play is a bi-monthly meetup whose goal is to give a better idea of what it’s like to create and play games today\, providing the opportunity to local independent game makers to showcase their work in a friendly and relaxed environment. Everybody’s welcome\, whatever their background and knowledge level. If you like video games\, we’ll make sure you have a good time! \nThe event is split into two parts: \n1. TALK: a couple of short game-related talks\, followed by a Q&A session – it’s all about sharing knowledge \n2. PLAY: games made by the speakers will be shown; in addition\, all participants are welcome to bring games they’ve made or are still working on – a perfect opportunity to discover and play new games\, collect feedback and maybe find collaborators too \nThe speakers at Talk & Play #1 will be: \nTinytouchtales is a Berlin-based duo\, which strives to create games and interactive stories for touch screen devices. In August 2012 Wiebke Rauers and Arnold Floeck teamed up with the desire to create their own projects apart from working in the film/animation and casual games business. So far they have released three iOS games and several prototypes for game jams such as Ludum Dare or the Global Game Jam. Their latest project is an interactive kids’ book\, which integrates games into a self written and fully illustrated story. Tinytouchtales is planning to go full-time indie at the beginning of 2014. They will talk about making games without a programmer. \nS. Astrid Bin is an artist and designer. She makes installations\, performances\, games\, experiences\, objects\, sounds and images. She will present her game Panic!\, an interactive story made with Twine\, a free and open source software\, possibly the simplest game making tool available today. \nTalk & Play is organised in collaboration with the monthly Berlin Mini Game Jam and A MAZE.

SUMMARY:Up Up Down Down Left Right Left Right B A Start
DESCRIPTION:Video Games as Performance Art \n\nFrom the website: \nSPACES hosts an unusual exhibition of performance art-featuring works that use the framework of video games to create performances. These works vary from interactive long-distance performances that are directed by viewers/players\, to video art created by documenting video game performances\, indie video games that invite players to perform within the presented framework\, and classic video games that highlight the performative nature of this interactive art form. \nPerformance art often centers around the artist’s body improvising within parameters or working through a set of directions. Video games set the stage for a dual performance of the player’s subtle physical dance of fingers across a controller and the virtual movements of pixel bodies. In Dana Sperry’s video First Person Shooter\, a player’s face is illuminated only by the pulsating glow of a first person shooter video game. Her eyes dart back and forth and her face slightly twists as the game becomes more difficult. This is a documented micro-performance choreographed by the action on the screen. \nWafaa Bilal’s contribution is a documentation of a performance that took place in Chicago’s FlatFile Galleries in 2007. Domestic Tension\, had Bilal\, an Iraqi\, living in the gallery for one month\, while a mounted paintball gun was controlled by users via the internet. Bilal and the gallery were pelted by yellow paintballs over the course of the month as people took the opportunity to shoot an Iraqi. \nPippin Barr’s quirky internet-based games use the form of video games to critique both gaming culture and the art world. In The Artist is Present\, named after the noted Marina Abramović at the Museum of Modern Art (2010)\, the player arrives at MoMA to attend the exhibition. After waiting in line for a ticket\, the player then joins an interminable queue to get the opportunity to sit with the pixilated Abramović. Rather than a game of action\, it is a game of patience that points toward the performances and frameworks that surround the art. \nVisitors to Up Up Down Down Left Right Left Right B A Start will have the opportunity to act out their own performances through artist-created games and arcade classics through July 19\, 2013. \nNote: “Up Up Down Down Left Right Left Right B A Start\,” also known as the “Konami Code\,” is a cheat code for some video games that allows players to immediately gain hundreds of lives or unlock “easter eggs”-special surprises or hidden game modes. \nArtists: \n\nPippin Barr\nWafaa Bilal\nMary Flanagan\nKnut Hybinette\nPaolo Pedercini\nTroy Richards\nDana Sperry

SUMMARY:Twofivesix
DESCRIPTION:“Twofivesix is a one-day conference devoted to the spaces between games\, play\, interaction and creativity. Targeting game designers\, digital creatives\, and platform builders\, our conference aims to show what games can teach other industries and what other industries can teach games.” \n\n \nFrom the website: \n“When we started Kill Screen\, we wanted to show the world why games matter. We think an integral part of this story lies at the intersection between videogames and the rest of the world. Games are a lens to view life in a new and fantastic way. We believe games have a lot to teach culture and culture has a lot to teach games. \nWe’ve worked with game designers in the past\, but we thought\, what better way to nurture cross-pollination than to bring some of the brightest gaming minds and sharpest folks from outside games into the same room? \nNew York City is becoming one of the most exciting game scenes on the planet. We are already seeing the influence of the city’s vibrant arts\, design\, music and tech communities brought to bear on some amazing videogame projects\, and we’re happy to call Brooklyn our home. Twofivesix will bring together some of the best and brightest who share this ethos to discuss the future of games.” \nKeynote Speakers: \n\nTim Schafer (Founder\, Double Fine Productions)\,\nDan Connors (CEO\, Telltale Games)\,\nRod Humble (CEO\, Linden Lab)\n\nSpeakers:\n\n\nYancey Strickler (Co-founder\, Kickstarter)\,\nPaola Antonelli (Senior Curator\, Architecture + Design\, MoMA)\,\nDennis Crowley (Co-founder\, Fourquare)\,\nZach Klein (Co-founder\, Vimeo)\,\nRobin Hunicke (Executive Producer\, Journey\, Flower)\nDavid Merrill (Co-founder\, Sifteo)\,\nPalmer Lucky (Creator\, Occulus Rift)\nNicholas Felton (Lead designer\, Facebook)\nMatt Boch (Project Director\, Dance Central 3)\nChristopher Paretti (Head of design\, GREE)\nMike Sespo (Co-founder\, Major League Gaming)\nJeffrey Yohalem (Lead writer\, Far Cry 3)\nAndy Hunter (Publisher\, Electric Literature)\nChris Poole (Founder\, DrawQuest / 4chan)\nJeffrey Lin (Lead designer (Social Systems)\, Riot Games)\nConstance Steinkuehler (Senior Policy Analyst\, Office of Science + Technology Policy\, White House)\nBill Squadrion (President\, Bloomberg Sports)\n\n\nVIDEO:
