3 June 2014 – Control Gamelab XII, a live talkshow hosted by Dutch game dev mag Control Magazine at Pakhuis de Zwijger (Amsterdam) discussed game education in the Netherlands with a panel consisting of educational and game dev professionals.
At one point Global Game Jam NL was discussed as a way to get students from different backgrounds together to work on games with each other. Once game jams were being discussed, the competitive nature of the Dutch game jams and Global Game Jam in the Netherlands was briefly mentioned as well. That was a cue for Dop Terlingen (HVA) to call me on stage (as GGJ ED) to talk a little bit about the ideas behind Global Game Jam worldwide.
Core values of Global Game Jam are collaboration and experimentation, the idea behind ‘jams’ is the moment itself not the outcome, so I told the crowd that the competitive element was ‘utter bullshit’ and that they shouldn’t be (‘…’) lazy but should grab every opportunity to travel the country and the world even to participate in jams all over and learn from each other. Yep.
As a bonus a vine!
