What’s this? Inspired by Kars‘ and Niels‘ efforts to create weeknotes, I will update this website with (irregular) scheduled notes about my work and what I’ve been up to.
Last week had the Indie Game: The Movie screening day!
On Monday and Tuesday we did some last-minute email rounds to invite even more people to the screening event of Tuesday. But doing an event in July and emailing around is bound to run into a a bunch of out-of-office replies. But the film theater told us that there were just a few tickets left anyway. So great news!
We got really excited for Tuesday when it was finally screening day. I went to Utrecht early in the afternoon to meet up with Peter, and later on Kitty and Liselore, to discuss some last minute things, such as: are we going to introduce the film and who will be doing that? At 6’ish the film theater ‘t Hoogt told us the screening was actually sold out! With The Netherlands seeing one of its rare sunny summer days, we could not be happier with this turn of events. Everything went quite smoothly, other than that the trains were delayed between Rotterdam and Utrecht, we expected quite a lot of people from that area. We decided to start the screening at 19.30 instead of 19.00h which would mean as many people as possible with a ticket would be able to see the start of the movie. I did some quick introductions to the film and thank you’s to the sponsor and my co-organizers and that was it, we could start!
Afterward we planned on going to the local pub the Bastaard where the indie meetups also take place but everyone was already chatting away with drinks at ‘t Hoogt. People were really engaged with the film and we had some great discussions. Event: Successful!
On Wednesday I had kind of a slow start of the day. The IGTM website I made with weebly showed me how relatively easy it was to create something decent with weebly as tool. On my to do list has been a ‘proper website for Women in Games NL’ initiative for quite a while now. I started fiddling around with weebly again, using it more as a tool to gather my thoughts on what the wignl website should and could be. I created a first framework for a speakers bureau inspired by the IGDA Women in Games Speakers Bureau (which recently got fired up again) and added some profiles of a couple of women I know who have experiences with speaking in public. Later that week I showed it to a few of them and got some great responses. So might actually going to move forward with the idea.
With that in place I had a meeting with Iris of Digitale Werkplaats on Thursday, to discuss ideas for the game exhibition in December. We are making some good progress on it, more on that later. On Skype later that day, I showed my GGJ colleague Gorm my framework for the women in games NL speakers bureau and got into a discussion on if and why it is actually needed. Might delve into that deeper possibly in a blogpost or article later. Late afternoon I went to the Flight 1337 offices to talk about a possible upcoming “First meetup of the WiGNL group” as I discussed earlier with a couple WiGNL people during the Utrecht Indie Meetup. I was meeting with Melinda whom kindly offered the Flight 1337 offices for our first upcoming meeting. We discussed details and August 10th it is!
Friday I sorted through the IGTM screening NL photos, edited and uploaded them to both Facebook and Flickr. I shared it through different social media channels and Indie Game: The Movie kindly shared it on their FB wall, which was of course much appreciated!
In the evening the London 2012 Olympics Opening Ceremonies was being broadcasted and I watched it with delight. Especially the lighting of the Olympic Flame with that amazing cauldron designed by Thomas Heatherwick was a wonderful highlight of the ceremony directed by Danny Boyle.
Sunday it was time for a couple of Global Game Jam meetings about the event, organization, funds etc.
