“It’s amazing how we forget how much fun we had when playing these games when we were young. And it’s still fun!” – Day in the Park participant.

Day in the Park
Last week we were visited by experimental game designer from Melbourne, Australia: Chad Toprak.
As Chad co-organizes local outdoor indie games party Hovergarden in Melbourne and develops quirky physical games, what better way to celebrate his visit than with a playful day in the sun? So last Saturday I organized a “Day in the Park – 2” with folk games, digital games and local multiplayer games.
Change of plans! Day in the Park, will be Day in the Garden today. Physical & digital games galore! https://t.co/hSjbmWlqzY

We aimed for the event to take place in the Wilhelminapark in Utrecht (like in 2010), but the weather seemed not to agree, so I asked Dutch Game Garden founder Viktor Wijnen if we could play in the garden instead. And lucky we were! The weather was changing its mind every five seconds, with mostly heavy rainfall.
Chad and I met up at the Dutch Game Garden where Chad set up a couple of local multiplayer games on laptops he brought with him and we rearranged the furniture in the garden’s atrium so there was enough space for physical games. Let the games begin!
We started off slow with a few people present, checking out all the games that we brought and could be played with two or four players.
After an hour or so a big group of people from different countries (Albania, Greece) suddenly joined us (thanks Ruben!) and said they wanted to play games. No hesitation there! First up: Ninja!
They played mostly folk games such as Gargoyles:
They really enjoyed Werewolf (twice!):

I should probably join…

Sander did not join, but he promised he would next time.
The group of people that had spontaneously joined us, enjoyed themselves immensely and even introduced us to new games from their own countries and backgrounds to play. Around dinner time they left, with the promise to join again in the future, and Chad got introduced to Dutch delicacies for dinner (fries with peanut sauce and ‘kroket’)
We ended the day playing more Samurai Gunn and GGJ 13 game Starwhal with Liselore (Monobanda) and Eric who joined us after dinner.
Day in the Park Garden turned out to be a great day with new faces, new games and multiplayer fun. Thanks everyone for joining and I hope to do another one again this summer. That time it -will- be in the park!
Played some awesome games like Gargoyles and Lemon Jousting with @MrCh4d @zoewi and others at the game garden.
